Séguin scores two, Gee-Gees dethrone champs to advance to U Cup semifinal

Marc-Antoine Seguin's second goal of the game at 16:04 of overtime led the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees to a 3-2 upset of the two-time defending U SPORTS champion UNB REDS in the second quarterfinal of the 2025 U SPORTS BioSteel University Cup in Ottawa.

The game capped a day of overtime thrillers as Ottawa advances to play the TMU Bold in one of Saturday's national semifinals. The Bold eliminated the Mount Royal Cougars 5-4 in the longest Canadian men's university hockey game ever played that took six hours and 42 minutes to play, delaying the start of the Ottawa-UNB contest by two hours. 

The delay didn't seem to hinder UNB who outshot Ottawa 13-4 in the first period and took a 1-0 lead to the dressing room after Benjamin Corbeil opened the scoring at 13:06. 

Séguin scored his first of the tournament on the powerplay at 15:39 of the second period. It was the first goal that UNB goaltender Samuel Richard had allowed that the University Cup in 277 minutes and 10 seconds of play, dating back to a late third period goal by UQTR in the 2023 University Cup semi-final in Charlottetown.

UNB reestablished its one goal advantage on Cody Morgan's powerplay tally midway through the third stanza. But the Gee-Gees who had only 15 the first 58 minutes, tied the game at 18:32 on Peter Stratis' first of the tournament set the scene for Séguin's historic goal that thwarted UNB's quest for a three-peat.

UNB outshot the Gee-Gees 43-22 as Gee-Gees netminder Franky Lapenna turned aside 41 UNB shots, while his Samuel Richard made 19 stops in a losing cause. 

With the win, Ottawa advances to the national semifinal for the first time since they fell to the then York Yeomen in a two-game total goal semi-final series in 1985 by a score of 11-8.
