Petrone leads Dinos into national final over upstart UPEI
On Wednesday, Nate Petrone won the Mike Moser Memorial Trophy as the U SPORTS player of the year, and on Friday he showed exactly why as he flirted with a triple-double and led his Calgary Dinos to an 87-54 win over the UPEI Panthers in the second semifinal of the 2025 INDOCHINO U SPORTS Men's Final 8 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver, Friday. Petrone erupted for 30 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists as he made his presence felt all over the floor. With the win, the No. 2-seeded Dinos advance to the U SPORTS championship game for the first time since 2019.
The Dinos opened strongly over the Panthers, who were hoping for their second upset over a Canada West team in as many days, taking a 28-17 lead after the first quarter and having a 46-33 edge at halftime. UPEI did cut the gap to within ten points at 52-43 in the third quarter, but could draw no closer as the Canada West champions cruised into Sunday's final.
Calgary also got contributions from Daniels Baumanis, who scored 14 points, Aidan Smith, who scored 13, and Dylan Lutes, who chipped in with 11.
For the Panthers, Kyree Thompson led with 16 points, while Kamari Scott was near to a double-double, with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Panthers, who saw their six-game winning streak snapped on Friday night, will head into Sunday's bronze medal game, where they will play the top-seeded Ottawa Gee-Gees at 10 a.m. Pacific.
The Dinos, meanwhile, head into Sunday's final against the Victoria Vikes, who they upset in the Canada West semifinal two weeks ago. That game is set for 1 p.m. Pacific and will air on CBC and Sportsnet in English and TVA Sports in French.
