SACKVILLE - The X-Men football team opened the season with a 19-6 loss on the road to the Mount Allison Mounties. The win marked the first one for the Mounties dating back to Oct. 4, 2008, and the first time they have won their season opener since 1999.

Kicker John Szilagyi made five field goals in his debut start for the Mounties, much to the delight of the Homecoming fans. The other Mount Allison points came on a safety and two singles.

Replying for the X-Men was kicker Anthony Alix who scored two field goals. Alix opened the scoring in the game with a first quarter field goal giving the X-Men an early 3-0 lead. Szilagyi quickly erased that lead with two field goals and a rouge before the opening quarter was complete for a 7-3 Mounties lead.

The second quarter brought about two more Mounties field goals and one X-Men field goal as Mount A took an 11-6 half-time lead into the locker room.

The X-Men offense weren't able to launch an attack in the second half of the game, and neither team was able to score a major. A Mounties safety and two more Szilagyi field goals rounded out the scoring for the 19-6 final.

Mounties quarterback Jake Hotchkiss was 16 for 26 in pass completions and threw for 141 yards. Mount A managed 112 rushing yards while the X-Men tallied just 48 yards on the ground. StFX quarterback Andrew Hickey, a transfer from Waterloo, was 10 for 24 for a total of 65 passing yards. Pat Coristine and Kwame Osei each had three receptions for the X-Men. Veteran receiver Gary Ross had 6 receptions for Mount Allison.

In the other AUS match-up the Acadia Axemen knocked off the CIS ranked No. 4 Saint Mary's Huskies 17-7 in Wolfville, NS. The AUS teams will meet QSSF opponents next week in the only week of interlock competition this season. The X-Men (0-1) will host the Montreal Carabins (2-0) while Saint Mary's hosts No. 1 ranked Laval (2-0). The Axemen (1-0) travel to Bishop's (1-1) and the Mounties (1-0) play at Sherbrooke (0-2).
