
DAY 9 RECAP 2025 FISU WINTER WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES
Acadia University’s Amy McCarthy continued to have a dream 2025 FISU Winter World University Games, earning her second medal in Torino with a terrific performance in Snowboarding-Big Air.
BIG AIR
After a silver medal performance in Slopestyle on January 17th, Amy McCarthy took to the skies in Big Air and earned her second medal in three days. The Acadia student finished third in the finals, giving her a bronze medal to go with her silver.
Jonah Cantelon of the University of Toronto qualified for the final and finished in eighth place in the Men’s Big Air.
MEN’S HOCKEY
Team Canada secured a dominant 9-1 victory over Japan in the quarterfinals tonight. Conor Frenette set the tone early, opening the scoring just 33 seconds into the game.
Samuel Huo (UBC) netted two goals, while Sasha Mutala delivered an outstanding six-point performance with one goal and five assists. Colson Gengenbach (University of Calgary) added to his impressive tournament tally with his sixth goal. Mathieu Bizier (Concordia), Kale McCallum (UNB), and Jake Lee (UBC) also found the back of the net.
Canada advances to the semifinals and will face Team USA on Tuesday.
CROSS COUNTRY SKIING
Helen McCulligh (Carleton University) and Rémi Boilard (Université Laval) delivered standout performances in the sprint qualifiers, posting the fifth and fourth fastest times, respectively. Both, alongside their teammates, advanced to the final, finishing 12th (McCulligh-Randall) and 15th (Brooke-Boilard) in a highly competitive field.
MEN’S CURLING
It was an up and down day for the University of Regina’s Josh Bryden, Adam Bukurak, Carter Williamson, and Ayden Whittmire. The team went 1-1, with a 10-4 loss at the hands of the top-ranked Norwegians, before a strong bounceback performance in a 7-1 win over Ukraine. They will battle the United Kingdom on Monday at PalaTazzoli in Torino.
WOMEN’S CURLING
Despite suffering their first loss of the Games, the University of Alberta’s Serena Gray-Withers, Catherine Clifford, Brianna Cullen, and Zoe Cinnamon still sit in a three-way tie for first place in the standings. The Pandas foursome went 1-1 on the day, beating Sweden 5-2 before falling 6-5 to Japan. They will take on Norway and China on Monday to finish off round robin play.
