DAY 5 RECAP 2025 FISU WINTER WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES
MEN’S HOCKEY
After a Simon Lavigne (Concordia University) goal in the first period put the Canadians ahead, Mark Howell’s team’s offense went cold, allowing Kazakhstan to score three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead into the final minute. The Canadians, despite outshooting their opponents 49-18 at the time, pulled goalie Kai Edmonds (Toronto Metropolitan University) and got last-minute goals from University of Calgary’s Colson Gengenbach and Universite du Quebec a Trois Riviere’s Conor Frenette to tie the game.
After overtime solved nothing, it was Team Canada that won the thriller in a shootout, thanks to a goal from UBC’s Jake Lee and the winner from Frenette. Canada now sits 2-0-1 in round robin play.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
Canada faced a stiff test in Team Slovakia, but the dynamic duo of University of Waterloo’s Leah Herrfort and Concordia University’s Emilie Lussier continued to impose themselves, combining for five points in a 6-2 victory. The pair have tallied 21 points in three games.
Concordia’s Emilie Lavoie added a goal and an assist, while Jordyn Verbeek (Concordia University) was the winning goaltender. Canada’s 3-0 record places them first in their division, meaning they’ll advance to Saturday’s semifinal.
MEN’S CURLING
The University of Regina team of Josh Bryden, Carter Williamson, Adam Bukurak, and Ayden Whittmire got off to a good start on Day One of the Men’s Curling event at the FISU Games. They topped Switzerland by a 7-5 score. They’ll play Poland on January 16th at PalaTazzoli in Torino.
