MONTREAL, Que. - After a cancelled 2020 season and many months since having played a varsity game, the Bishop's Gaiters dusted off their uniforms and picked up a historic 52-7 win over McGill in the 2021 season opener on Saturday afternoon.
McGill opened the scoring and went up 7-0 early in the first half but the Gaiters returned the favour and never looked back, scoring 52 unanswered points. BU controlled the possession for the duration of the game and stood strong as a defense. Offensively, the Gaiters exploited quick, fast attacks and breakaway speed on the wings, which the Martlets were unable to match.
The victory was a team effort and saw seven different Gaiters etch their names on the scoresheet. Fifth year senior,
Erika Scott (Dewittville, QC/John Abbott College), showcased her years of experience and scored two tries while
Mia Veneziano (Rosemere, QC/Dawson College),
Savannah Leroux (Saint Anne De Bellevue, QC/John Abbott College),
Annabelle Chamberland-Dostie (Trois-Rivières, QC/Cégep de Trois-Rivières),
Myriam Elkas (Sherbrooke, QC/Champlain-Lennoxville),
Kaitie Shea (Saint John, NB/Saint John H.S.) and substitute
Katie Locke (Tiny, ON/Dr. G.W. Williams S.S.) each added a tally.
Kaitie Shea (Saint John, NB/Saint John H.S.) converted on six of eight attempts.
Head coach,
Tom Whyld, was impressed with the team's performance and is excited to have the first win in the books. With the win comes momentum and confidence which the Gaiters look to build on heading into the rest of the season.
Next week, the Gaiters (1-0) are on the road again and look to improve their record when they face the Montréal Carabins (1-0) on Sunday September 19. Game time is set for 1PM.
