X-Women open AUS season on winning note

Sackville, NB - The StFX X-Women opened the AUS regular season with a victory, shutting out the Mount Allison Mounties 4-0 on Friday night.

Both teams played a tight first period with the hometown Mounties getting the best chances with two first period power plays. But it was the X-Women who got on the board first as Tyra Meropoulis scored 14:58 into the first period. Kristen McKinley picked up an assist as the visitors took a 1-0 first period lead to the locker room.

StFX extended their lead to 2-0 at 12:41 of the second period when Lacey Dimaulo beat Mounties goalie Katie Mowbray. Meropoulis was back at it in the third period as she scored her second of the game with 5:35 gone in the 3rd period.

The X-Women rounded out the scoring when Kate Gotaas fired the puck into the empty Mounties net with 20 seconds remaining. The Mounties had pulled their goalie for an extra attacked as they pushed for a late goal.

Shots in the game favoured the X-Women at 34-17.

The Mounties return to action on Saturday as they travel to UPEI for a 7:00 pm start. StFX will host Dalhousie on Sunday at 2:00 pm in their home opener.
