Gryphons finish Gaels in quick 3-0 match

The Guelph Gryphon men's volleyball team dominated the Queens Gaels tonight (Nov. 11th) with a quick 3-0 win, in Guelph at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. Set scores were 25-13, 25-21, and 25-14.

The Gryphons add another win to their standings, now 4-1, while the Gaels drop their third game in a row for a 1-3 record.

Guelph entered the game ready to go, and quickly built a significant lead over Queens. The Gryphons played a strong first set with help from Andrew Whitaker, (Sharon, ON), Ryan Killeen (Oakville, ON) and Winston Rosserr (Whitby, ON). Midway through the first Guelph had built a 10 point lead and the Gaels were scrambling on the court trying to close the gap, but couldn't overcome them. The final point was won after Whitaker's serve was returned by the Gaels, but Rosser responded with a kill to end it.

The second set wasn't quite as easy for the Gryphons. They built an early lead but the Gaels' outside hitter Joren Zeeman (Cambridge, ON) helped pull Queens back into the game. A number of Gryphon errors contributed to the Gaels comeback and Queens took the lead for the first time in the match at 16-17. The Gryphons were tense after losing their lead but Whitaker became the force behind their second set win. He took control of the game for the Gryphons with four consecutive kills that took them to the end.

Rosser opened set three with a kill that set the standard for the rest of the match. Despite a number of lost points by Gryphon service errors, Guelph continued to play strong and built a comfortable lead ahead of Queens. Near the end of the third a rally broke out between the two teams that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats, and was finally ended in Guelph's favour by a block from Greg Houston (Chatham, ON). Rosser ended the quick 3-0 match with a final block, set score for the third 25-14.

The Gryphons were led by Whitaker with 15 kills and 7 digs, along with Rosser who contributed 13 kills and 4 digs. Close behind was Killeen with 7 kills, 3 aces and 6 digs.  Zeeman led the Gaels with a total 8 kills, 2 aces and 1 dig.

The Gryphons next play the RMC Paladins tomorrow night (Nov 12) in Guelph at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. The game begins at 8pm.
