WINNIPEG - The #4 Regina Cougars made it 10 straight conference wins with a 74-50 victory over the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of M campus).

Charlotte Kot had 17 points and collected five rebounds in only 21 minutes of action for the Cougars (14-2). Jennilea Coppola finished one board shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

The result extended Manitoba's conference losing streak to 12 games. Allison Balasko had 11 points to lead the Bisons (3-13) while Sheree Carmona-Galdamez chipped in with 10.

Coming up for the Bisons is a pair of games next weekend in British Columbia, starting on Friday, January 31 in Kamloops when they take on the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. The Cougars will also head west for their next game on Friday versus the Pacific Division-leading Fraser Valley Cascades.

ABBOTSFORD, BC - The Fraser Valley Cascades (12-4) managed another win tonight at the Envision Athletic Center (65-52), despite a splash of sloppy play and a tenacious UBCO Heat (3-13) effort.

Even with the win, the Cascades are still only two points ahead of UBC and UVic in the Pacific Division, while the Heat remain tied with TWU for seventh.

Sarah Wierks had 16 points, 10 rebounds, and three steals for the Cascades, who also received important contributions from Aieisha Luyken (12 points), and Shayna Litman (13 points in 12 minutes). The Heat were led by Jessica Jazdarehee, who kept UBCO in the game with a breakout 15 point performance.

The Cascade will play again at 6 pm on Jan 31 against the Regina Cougars at the EAC. The Heat will defend their home court next Friday against the Winnipeg Wesmen.

Timberwolves-Thunderbirds Stats

VANCOUVER - With every player on the team contributing to the scoreline, the UBC Thunderbirds overcame the UNBC Timberwolves 84-58 on Saturday night at War Memorial Gymnasium.

With the win, the Thunderbirds complete the sweep of the Prince George visitors after triumphing 79-58 on Friday night. They advance to 11-5 in Canada West regular season play while the Timberwolves fall to 4-12.
 
UBC racked-up a stunning 21 steals and 22 assists Saturday, paying testament to their defensive resilience, and the veteran dynamic duo of Kris Young and Harleen Sidhu championed the team's offence. Young led the team with a game-high 18 points and five steals, while Sidhu contributed 16 points and five rebounds.
 
The Timberwolves looked to fifth-year Mercedes VanKoughnett to lead the charge. VanKoughnett contributed 17 points and four steals, while Sarah Robin and Mavia Nijjer recorded 14 and 11 points, respectively.
 
Next weekend, the Thunderbirds will travel to Alberta to take on the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday evening and the University of Calgary Dinos Saturday.

Tip-off for Friday is at 5 p.m PT and 4 p.m. Saturday. The Timberwolves will travel to Saskatchewan Friday and Alberta on Saturday.

VICTORIA – The Victoria Vikes played their second game in a row against the Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday, posting another decisive 76-51 victory to move to 11-5. The Vikes jumped out to an early lead and did not look back, handing the Cougars their 15th loss of the season at McKinnon Gymnasium.
 
Second-year Vike Jenna Bugiardini led the Vikes in scoring on the night, putting up 20 points through 25 minutes of play. Teammate Jessica Renfrew finished second with 17 points and five rebounds.
 
Missing key starter Jordan Maclean, who led her team in scoring the previous night despite playing just over 10 minutes, the Cougars struggled to put up points all night long. Candice Duckett came off the bench to lead her squad with 13 points in 17 minutes of action, while teammates Danica Rybachuk and Alicia Tan rounded out the top-three scorers for the Cougars with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
 
The Vikes will head out on the road to face Calgary and Lethbridge, Jan. 31-Feb.1. Both games will be broadcast on www.canadawest.tv.

EDMONTON - The #3 Alberta Pandas made it 13 straight wins, thanks to a 70-47 victory over the Calgary Dinos on Saturday night at the Saville Community Sports Centre.
 
Andria Carlyon had 16 points and a team-leading six rebounds. Fourth-year forward Kendra Asleson had another solid night for the evergreen and gold, picking up 13 points and six boards.
 
The Pandas continue to sit in first place in the Prairie Division, but also remain tied with the Saskatchewan Huskies and the Regina Cougars, all with 14-2 records.
 
Calgary, at 11-5, sits six points back of the three-way tie for first place, but remain locked on the final Prairie Division playoff spot. On Saturday, the Dinos were paced third-year Jessica Thielen's 16 points. The former Eastern Washington player also had a team high six rebounds on the night. Kristie Sheils, Friday night's leading scorer for Calgary, had 10 points on Saturday.
 
Alberta remains at home next weekend, when they take on Mount Royal and UNBC, while the Dinos return home to host the UBC Thunderbirds and the Victoria Vikes.

SASKATOON - Third-year forward Dalyce Emmerson recorded a double-double of 29 points and 11 rebounds to lead the #5 Saskatchewan Huskies to an 80-58 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday at the PAC.

Emmerson led all scorers with 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and an 11-of-14 performance from the free throw line. The CIS rebounding and blocked shots leader grabbed six of her 11 boards on the offensive end and added five blocks in the win.

The Huskies improve to 14-2 with the weekend sweep and remain in contention at the top of the Canada West Prairie Division standings. Lethbridge drops to 5-11 on the season.

Fifth-year guard Kiera Lyons added 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting for the Huskies. Kabree Howard dished out a game-high six assists.

Ali Cameron scored a team-high 19 points for the Pronghorns. Kim Veldman, the Canada West's second leading scorer, added 16 points and nine rebounds.

Saskatchewan remains at home to take on the UNBC Timberwolves and Mount Royal Cougars next weekend. The Pronghorns will host the UBC Thunderbirds and Victoria Vikes.

LANGLEY, BC – The Trinity Western Spartans lost its second game in as many nights against Thompson Rivers as the Spartans fell 63-51 to the WolfPack on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.
 
The Spartans fall to 3-13 on the season while TRU improves to 9-7.
 
TRU was led by Jorri Duxbury, who had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Kassie Colonna, who had 20 points and four boards.
 
The Spartans Laurissa Weigl had a team-high 14 points and 11 rebounds while Kayla Gordon added 12 points and five rebounds.
 
The Spartans are back at home next weekend when they host Brandon Jan. 31 and Regina Feb. 1. The WolfPack returns home as it will host Manitoba Jan. 31 and Winnipeg Feb. 1.

WINNIPEG - A total team effort lifted the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 76-66 victory over the Brandon Bobcats on Saturday night in the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium.

Five Wesmen players scored in double-digits led by Megan Noonan's game high 17 points. Noonan drained four-three pointers in the contest. Stephanie Kleysen finished with 13 points.

Brandon was led by Cassie Cooke's double-double consisting of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Keegan Robinson added 15, including three-three pointers.

Winnipeg (8-8) will be on the road next week beginning Friday night at UBC Okanagan and Saturday night in Kelowna against Thompson Rivers. Brandon (5-11) will take on Trinity Western and Fraser Valley on the West Coast.

ABBOTSFORD, BC – On KidSport Night at UFV, the Fraser Valley Cascades (11-4) put in a dominant performance against the UBC Okanagan Heat (3-12) on Friday at the Envision Athletic Centre, securing a 66-31 victory.

Courtesy of the win the Cascades remain first in the Pacific division, two points up on the Victoria Vikes and UBC Thunderbirds (both 10-5).

Both Emily Kanester and Sarah Allison, usually UBCO's key scorers, were held off the scoreboard in the first half. The majority of UFV's scoring in the half came from Nataliia Gavryliuk (8 points), Sarah Wierks (9 points), and Shayna Litman (8 points). By halftime UFV led 33-15, and the Cascades would continue to lead by double digits for the rest of the game.

Eleven of twelve Cascades finished the night with at least one assist (21 total), and the team generated 17 steals overall. Sarah Wierks led UFV's scoring with 15 points and 7 rebounds, while Nataliia Gavryliuk added 13 points and three steals in a galvanizing performance. The Heat were led by Jessica Jazdarehee with 10 points.

Manitoba is now 3-12 and Regina improves to 13-2. The regular season is almost over with about one month to go until playoffs.
 
Clarke, who is also ninth in CIS for shooting, went into the game with an 18.3 points per game average and against the Bisons she had the game-high of 16 points plus added nine rebounds. Clarke's teammate Charlotte Kot got a double-double with 12 rebounds and 11 points. Bison Allison Balasko finished with 11 points and captain Christiane Fischer with a team-high six boards.
 
Regina and Manitoba go head-to-head again on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

With the win Saskatchewan, improves to 13-2 on the season. Lethbridge drops to 5-10 with the loss.

Kelsey Trulsrud scored a game-high 13 points, while grabbing six rebounds. Desarae Hogberg added 12 more points. Kiera Lyons recorded four steals in the win.

The Pronghorns leading scorer on the season, Kim Veldman, led the squad again with 12 points and eight rebounds. Katlyn Olsen added 10 more points

The two squads will meet again on Saturday at 6:15 p.m.

Dinos-Pandas Stats

EDMONTON - The #3 Alberta Pandas racked up a big lead against the Calgary Dinos on Friday at the Saville Community Sports Centre, and then watched it almost slip away. In the end, the Pandas escaped Friday night with a 69-65 victory, which was their 12th straight win in conference play.
 
Fifth-year post Andria Carlyon led the Pandas, and all players, with a game-high of 23 points while also adding seven rebounds. Guard Renee Byrne added 14 points. The Dinos were led by Kristie Sheils' 18 points, as well as Tamara Jarrett's 17 points.
 
With the win, the Pandas improve to 13-2 on the season, and while they are first in the Prairie Division, they remain tied with the Regina Cougars and Saskatchewan Huskies for the top spot.
 
The Dinos, now at 11-4, hold steady in fourth place. Only the top four teams from each division advance to the Canada West playoffs, and Calgary is virtually assured a spot at this point as fifth place Winnipeg is eight points back.

The provincial rivals will clash again on Saturday night, with tip-off scheduled for 5:00 pm.

VICTORIA – The Victoria Vikes started their playoff push in good fashion, ousting the Mount Royal Cougars 79-55 on Friday at McKinnon Gym.

The Vikes improve 10-5, while the Cougars continue to anchor the Pacific Division at 1-14.
 
Cassandra Goodis opened the Vikes scoring with a three-pointer from the baseline and the home team never looked back to earn as much as 30-point lead throughout the game. Jenny Lewis, Sarah Semeniuk, Jenna Bugiardini and Jessica Renfrew all scored in double digits.
 
First-year Cougars head coach Len Harvey's squad put on a classy effort, staying with the Vikes who paced them throughout all four quarters. The undisputable leader on the night was second-year forward Jordan McLean who gave the Vikes' defence fits to finish the night with 14 points, 10 of which came in the opening quarter.
 
The Cougars and Vikes will clash againon Saturday at McKinnon Gym at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast live at canadawest.tv.

With the victory, UBC improves to 10-5, while UNBC falls to 4-11.

Fourth-year guard Kris Young tallied 18 points and a game-high nine steals, one off the school record of 10, Friday night, while Cassandra Knievel added 17.
 
Fifth-year Mercedes VanKoughnett led the way for the Timberwolves, tallying a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds. The 5-8 guard's presence on the court was vital to UNBC's success in the first, and she communicated effectively alongside Emily Kaehn, Mavia Nijjer, and Sarah Robin, who contributed seven points apiece.
 
On Saturday they play again at War Memorial Gymnasium. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.

BRANDON, MB – The Brandon Bobcats had their winning streak snapped, dropping a 58-54 decision to the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen Thursday night.

Kaela Cranston had a stellar night for the Bobcats scoring 23 points, which includes seven three-pointers.  Cassie Cooke added 13 points and five rebounds.
 
Stephanie Kleysen led the way for the Wesmen, notching a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.  Megan Noonan chipped in with 16 points, while Danielle Baril added eight points and 16 rebounds.
 
With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 5-10, while the Westmen sit at 7-8.
 
The teams will tip-off again in a rematch Saturday in Winnipeg at the Duckworth Centre.
