Fast start no help against Lions

TORONTO, Ont. – Eight seconds. It took Ontario Tech just eight seconds to open the scoring, but could not sustain the momentum, losing 4-2 against the York Lions in Friday women's hockey action.

The Ridgebacks were facing a second nationally ranked team in as many games and exploded out of the gate, with Alex Frigon (Dartmouth, N.S.) needed only eight seconds after the opening face-off to find the back of the net. The game settled into a good pace as the teams clashed in their first meeting of the season. A late goal by the Lions would send the teams into the dressing room tied 1-1.

Ontario Tech had an opportunity early in the second period to regain the lead with a power play, unfortunately it would the home team that struck with a shorthanded goal. The Ridgebacks continued to battle and push for the equalizer, only to see another late period goal by the Lions.

As time wound down in regulation the teams traded goals with under five minutes to play. Ontario Tech will stay on the road tomorrow as they travel to St. Catharines for a contest with the Brock Badgers.
  • Frigon finished a solo effort to open the scoring.
• Kelsey McHolm evened the game at 16:43 of the first, with a perfect shot from the slot.
• Courtney Gardiner scored shorthanded at 3:51 of the second period, with Tayler Murphy extending the Lions lead at 18:17 of the period.
• Becky Higgs gave the Lions a three-goal lead at 15:39 of the third.
Megan Johnston (Goderich, Ont.) scored a power play goal at 17:28 of the final frame to bring the Ridgebacks within two.
Briar Hughes (Thornton, Ont.) made 25 saves in her first game of the year.
• Juliana Thomson stopped 12 of the 14 she saw.
