Gryphons take home first win of East Coast tour

WOLFVILL, N.S. - Despite a hard fought effort and a late fourth quarter push by the Axewomen, the Axewomen fell 63-57 to the visiting Guelph Gryphons.

A strong start from the Gryphons who were shooting strong, 62% from the three point line, had them pull away in the first half but a spark from the Acadia bench proved that Axewomen weren't going to back down.

Late in the second quarter Coach Greenlaw called a timeout that had Acadia pull to within nine at the half with the score at 30-39.

In the fourth quarter the Axewomen came out strong and forced a number of key turnovers including 2 that led to 3 point plays by Acadia's Kristy Moore.

The Axewomen battled back hard but in the end it was too late and they fell 57-63 to Guelph, who completed their east coast tour with their first win against Acadia. The Gryphons lost to Saint Mary's and StFX prior to their last game against the Axewomen.

Gryphon Erica McFadeen netted a game high 21 points and was named the Subway Player of the Game, while teammates Katherine MacTavish and Julia Tennant had 12 and 11 points respectively.

For a second game in a row, senior guard Kristy Moore had the Acadia high 18 points, falling short of her 35 points scored against UQAM on Friday evening.

Guelph was an impressive 46% from the floor while Acadia posted 31%

The Axewomen face UQAM tomorrow morning at 11:00 am, a rematch of Friday's overtime win by the Acadia, at Horton High School.
