Golden Hawks edge Lakers in home opener
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 3, 2014) – Dollee Meigs of Owen Sound, Ont., scored the lone goal in the shootout to lead the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s hockey team past the Nipissing Lakers in Laurier’s home opener Thursday night at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 3, 2014) – Dollee Meigs of Owen Sound, Ont., scored the lone goal in the shootout to lead the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team past the Nipissing Lakers in Laurier's home opener Thursday night at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.
Meigs, a second year forward, also added an assist to help the Hawks avoid an upset after they led 2-0 midway through the first period.
Scoring for the purple and gold in regulation were captain Laura Brooker of Fergus, Ont., and Jessie Hurrell of Palgrave, Ont., while Bronwyn Bolduc of Thunder Bay, Ont., and Sam Strassburger of Schreiber, Ont., responded for Nipissing.
Laurier netminder Amanda Smith picked up the victory as she stopped 18 shots in regulation and overtime before turning away all three shooters for Nipissing.
Jacqueline Rochefort of Ajax, Ont., shone for the Lakers as she kicked aside 28 of the 30 shots she faced, including 10 in the second period when her team was outshot 10-1.
Up next for the Hawks, they will host the Laurentian Voyageurs on Sunday evening at the Waterloo Recreation Complex. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
NOTES: Brooker left the game in the second period after taking a knee-on-knee hit from a Lakers defender…former Golden Hawk Brittany Crago of Stouffville, Ont., who played four years at Laurier, made her return to Waterloo as she plays out her final year of eligibility with Nipissing.
