SMU falls to UNB

(HALIFAX, N.S.)—Visiting UNB defeated the SMU Huskies 3-0 on Saturday evening in Atlantic University Sport women's soccer action from Huskies Stadium.

Striker Abbie Sullivan (Minneapolis, MN) opened the scoring for UNB in the 4^th minute off a free kick from midfielder Sylvie Fecteau (Moncton, NB).

Sullivan got just enough of the free kick to beat SMU keeper Itai Kuwodza (Harare, Zimbabwe) for a UNB 1-0 early lead.

Striker Danika Lefebvre (Fredericton, NB) scored goals two and three for UNB in a 10-minute stretch.

Her first goal came in the 8^th minute as she directed Sullivan's cross from the right wing past Kuwodza for a 2-0 lead.

Her second goal was a mirror image of her first, except fullback Clarisse Ramirez (Ottawa, ON) drove down the left wing and connected with a driving Lefebvre, giving UNB a 3-0 lead in the 18^th minute.

UNB tallied 11 shots compared to six for Saint Mary's in the first half, as the Reds took a 3-0 lead at half.

The second half went scoreless with UNB outshooting SMU 5-1 in the half and 16-7 for the match.

Kuwodza, making her third emergency start in a row, made five saves in the loss for SMU, who fall to 1-6-0 on the year.

Brynn Nash (Saskatoon, SK) collected four saves in nets for UNB and improve to 2-3-1 in conference play.

For her efforts, 4^th year captain Fecteau was named Player of the Game.

Both teams return to action next week with SMU visiting the Dal Tigers in the Halifax Derby on October 3^rd at 5 p.m. at the Wanderers Grounds.

Acadia travels to Fredericton October 5^th for a 1 p.m. match versus UNB.
