Ridgebacks split opening weekend with win over Ravens

OSHAWA, Ont. – Georgia Wilder's (Zurich, Ont.) goal and a Mikaela Tierney (King City, Ont.) goal-line defensive stop were the difference on Sunday as the Ontario Tech University women's soccer program earned their first win of the 2019 season.

Wilder's 19th minute goal came off a broken play in front of the Ravens net. She put it cross-net along the ground past a screened Sarah Wicks to give Ontario Tech the eventual game-winning goal in the 1-0 match.

The squads were relatively evenly matched as Carleton outshot Ontario Tech 10-8 in the match, but late in the match the Ravens had their best opportunity, nearly ruining the day for the Ridgebacks.

With multiple shots towards the goal, eventually Carleton had keeper Olivia Tierney (King City, Ont.) out of position, but it was her sister Mikaela that stopped the ball with her head on the goal line to help Ontario Tech hold on for their first win of the 2019 season.

"Her (Mikaela) defensive play late in the match – the will to keep the ball out of the net – was unbelievable and world class," said head coach Peyvand Mossavat. "She is a captain that doesn't accept losing and is willing to sacrifice her body to keep the ball out of the night. A play like that inspires the players around her and gives the team a boost."

Olivia Tierney made eight saves in the clean sheet victory, her third as a Ridgeback. Wicks made three saves in the loss.

Next weekend the Ridgebacks head north for their next conference matches against the Nipissing Lakers and Laurentian Voyageurs. Those come after their final friendly match of the year, the annual Campus Cup, against the cross-campus rival Durham Lords on Tuesday night. Kick off for the friendly is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Vaso's Field.

Overall Record: 1-2-1 (W-L-D)
Conference Record: 1-1-0

Next Match: Tuesday, Sept. 3 vs. Durham Lords (Campus Cup – 7:30 p.m. – Vaso's Field)
