Saint Mary’s honor graduating seniors in final home game

(HALIFAX, NS)—The Cape Breton University Capers defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 9-0 in AUS women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon from Huskies Stadium.

Keona Simmonds (Brampton, ON) recorded a hat-trick and powered the CBU offence, which came in ranked as the USports No. 4 team in the land.

The Capers opened the scoring in the 7th minute, catching a lucky break when defender Becky Hanna (Howie Centre, NS) scored her second goal on the season on a long shot which caught the SMU keeper off-guard for a 1-0 lead.

A Saint Mary's own goal in the 9th minute added to CBU's lead 2-0.

Simmonds ended the first-half scoring in the 30th minute and the Capers led 3-0 at half.

The first fifteen minutes of the second half saw two goals from CBU in the 53rd and 60th minutes as MacKenna King (Barrie, ON) scored her first of the season on an assist from Maddy Johnson (Barrie, ON) and Rachel Leck (Pickering, ON) added her fourth tally on the year with help from Ciera Disipio (Ottawa, ON) who scored her 11th goal of the year in the 70th minute.

Simmonds added her 11th and 12th goals of the year three minutes apart in the 71st and 73rd minutes.

Chelsea Foote (Halifax, NS) ended the scoring in the 84th minute with her second tally of the year for Cape Breton, who finish at 11-0-1 (34 points) and take the top-seed into the 2017 Subway AUS Women's Soccer Championship hosted by StFX in Antigonish, NS November 2nd-5th.

Ashely Blank (Dartmouth, NS) had 14 saves and took the loss in nets for SMU who end their season at 0-11-1 (one point) while Rachel Yerxa (Mississauga, ON) picked up her fifth win for CBU.

Saint Mary's honoured three fifth-year players playing their final university game in midfielders Jessie MacPherson (Dartmouth, NS) and Mary Bennett (Vernon, BC) and defender Celina Cavadini (Halifax, NS).
