Cougars-Huskies Stats

SASKATOON - Stephon Lamar scored 26 points to lead the #9 Saskatchewan Huskies to an 81-58 win over the Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday at the PAC.

Lamar went 10-for-16 from the field in the win, including a 3-for-4 performance from beyond the arc. The 2012-13 Canada West MVP added four assists on the night.

With the win Saskatchewan improves to 14-4. Mount Royal drops to 7-11 on the season.

Ben Baker added 21 points and six rebounds for the Huskies, going a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Matt Forbes grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Jared Cornish was the leading scorer for the Cougars with 17 points. Cornish, Kyle Wilson and James Lefebvre all collected five rebounds.

Saskatchewan will be on the road for its remaining four Canada West regular season games beginning with pair against the Winnipeg Wesmen next weekend. Mount Royal hosts the Trinity Western Spartans next weekend.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – In a match-up of the conference's #2 offensive team versus the top defensive team it was the latter that poured it on offensively, especially in the opening quarter as the #3 Victoria Vikes handily beat the Lethbridge Pronghorns 84-57.
 
Logan Reiter was the lone Pronghorn to reach double digits with 18 points and Brent Watkins and Brandon Brine contributed with nine and eight points, respectively.
 
The loss drops the ‘Horns to 12-6 on the season and two games behind the Saskatchewan Huskies for second place in the Prairie Division with four games to play, while the Vikes improve to 16-2 and are firmly planted in top spot in the Pacific Division.
 
With their sights still set on hosting the opening round of the Canada West playoffs, the Pronghorns head out on the road next weekend, traveling to Brandon to take on the Bobcats, while the Vikes will return home for a Pacific Division battle with the Thompson Rivers WolfPack

Thunderbirds-Dinos Stats

CALGARY – An impressive scoring run midway through the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as the UBC Thunderbirds kept pace in the playoff race with a 74-66 win over the Calgary Dinos on Saturday night in the Jack Simpson Gym.
 
The win improves UBC's record to an even 9-9 on the year, ensuring them at least a share of the final playoff spot heading into the final four games of the regular season. Calgary, meanwhile, falls to 5-13 and is out of the playoff picture after losing both games this weekend.
 
Despite playing just 24 minutes, Tommy Nixon was effective and scored a game-high 20 points of five-of-eight shooting from the field and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. He was joined by Kedar Wright's 17 points, with Wright hauling down a team-high nine rebounds.
 
Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson once again led the Dinos with 18 points on the night, but he connected on just seven of his 23 field goal attempts and was 0-for-8 from beyond the arc. Matt Letkeman was the Dinos' most effective player offensively with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting.
 
UBC returns home next weekend to face provincial cousin UBC Okanagan in a two-game series at War Memorial Gym before closing the season with an important home-and-home series against Victoria. The Dinos, meanwhile, head on the road to face the Regina Cougars next weekend before ending their season against Lethbridge in a rare Wednesday-Thursday home-and-home series. Action that week will get underway Wednesday, Feb. 12 in Lethbridge, with the season finale set for the Jack Simpson Gym on Thursday, Feb. 13.

EDMONTON - With a great first quarter, the #4Alberta Golden Bears propelled themselves to their fifth-straight victory, a 96-70 decision over the visiting UNBC Timberwolves, Saturday night at the Saville Community Sports Centre.

Team-leading scorer Jordan Baker had a game-high 23 points while fourth-year guards Joel Friesen and Czar Robotham, who have both played less than 10 games for Alberta so far this season, netted 18 and 12 points, respectively.

Hailing from Yaounde in Cameroon, Franck Olivier Kouagnia had a team-high 19 points while UNBC's top scorer Charles Barton added 15.

The Golden Bears head out on the road next weekend to face off against the Manitoba Bisons while UNBC returns home to host the Fraser Valley Cascades.

Cougars-Spartans Stats

LANGLEY, BC – Thanks to an impressive fourth quarter flurry, the Trinity Western Spartans moved back up to the .500 mark with a 67-59 win over Regina on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.
 
With the game tied 52-52 with just under six minutes to play, the Spartans went on 14-0 run that gave TWU the lead for good. An alley-oop from Robert Rodriguez (Sacramento, Calif.) to Denny McDonald (Mississauga, Ont.) capped the run and the Spartans found themselves up 66-52. After that, the Cougars never threatened.
 
The Spartans are now tied with UBC for the fourth and final playoff position in the Pacific Division. The loss drops Regina to 3-15.

The Spartans were led by McDonald, who had 20 points and seven rebounds while going eight for 16 from the free throw line. Justin Bakuteka had 15 points and five boards and Rodriguez had a game-high 11 rebounds to go with seven points.
 
Regina was led by Travis Sylvestre, who had 17 points and five rebounds, while Brendan Hebert and Matthew Augustine had 11 points each.
                                                       
The Spartans are on the road next weekend when they travel to Calgary to play Mount Royal Feb. 7-8 while the Cougars return home to host Calgary.

Manitoba 76 UBC Okanagan 68

KELOWNA, BC - Clutch treys by Yassine Ghomari and Ryan Linttell late were not enough to lift the UBC Okanagan Heat past the visiting Manitoba Bisons on Saturday night as Manitoba claimed a 76-68 win.

Fifth-year Bisons 6-7 forward Dan Penner quelled the late Heat comeback with six big points in the final 4.5 minutes to ice the Bison victory.

KidSport, in their annual fundraiser at UBC Okanagan, earned $350 off the seven three-pointers potted by the Heat ($50 was donated by the athletics department for each made Heat three-ball).

Fifth-year wing Landry Ndayitwayeko (Windsor, ON) led the Heat with 18 points on 6-13 shooting including 3-7 from the arc. The Heat rebounded by committee well with four players with five boards.

The Heat are now 3-15 on the season while the Bisons pick up their fifth win and are 5-13.

The Heat hit the road to Vancouver next weekend for a matchup at sister campus UBC and the Thunderbirds in Vancouver. Tip-off at War Memorial Gymnasium is at 8 p.m. The Bisons host the #4 Alberta Golden Bears for a pair of games.

Wesmen-WolfPack Stats

KAMLOOPS, BC - Josh Wolfram has scored a lot of baskets in his life, but none bigger than the one he potted at the Tournament Capital Centre on Saturday night.  Wolfram, a third year forward with the Thompson Rivers  WolfPack, scored a three point shot with 1.6 seconds remaining to give his team a 67-66 victory over the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen.

The WolfPack swept both home games this weekend and now stand at 11-7. Winnipeg split its trip to the B.C. interior and falls to 12-7.

Josh Wolfram had 19 points and 13 rebounds. Tallon Milnehad a game-high 21 points to lead TRU.

Winnipeg's top marksmen were Christopher Baxter, with 15 points. Steven Wesley had 12 points.

Fraser Valley 83 Brandon 71

Bobcats-Cascades Stats

ABBOTSFORD, BC - The Fraser valley Cascades (13-5) downed the Brandon Bobcats (5-13) by a score of 83-71 on Friday at the Envision Athletic Centre, keeping their win streak alive against a rough and ready Bobcats squad.

The Cascades have not lost a conference game since November 23, 2013, and recently clinched a playoff spot. At fifth in the Prairie Division, Brandon is out of playoff contention.

UFV's Jasper Moedt multiplied his presence to the point where he could have been his own team, accumulating 23 points, 19 rebounds, and five assists. Klaus Figueredo, Kadeem Willis, and Kevon Parchment finished with 12 points each, while Manjodh Dulay tallied 18 (6-14 from beyond the arc).

Dulay is now 30-75 from the three on the season, the thirteenth best percentage in the Canada West.

The Bobcats were led by A.M. Benabdelhak and Jordan Reaves with 14 points apiece.

The Cascades will travel to Prince George next Friday to take on the UNBC Timberwolves. The Bobcats will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns in Brandon.

#3 Victoria 92 Calgary 64


Vikes-Dinos Stats

CALGARY – The  Calgary Dinos were no match for the #3 Victoria Vikes on Jan. 31 as they defeated them 92-64 at Jack Simpson Gym.

With the loss, Calgary falls to 5-12, officially putting them out of playoff contention for the 2013-14 season. For the Vikes, they improve to 15-2, holding down first place in the Pacific Division.

The Dinos were led by Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson and Josh Turner who both had 13 points on the night. Matt Letkeman scored another ten for Calgary and almost reached a double-double, grabbing a game-high nine rebounds.

For Victoria, Chris McLaughlin scored a game-high 20 points followed by 18 from Terrell Evans. Kyle Peterson recorded 11 points and six assists while Ryan Erikson added another 10 for the Vikes.
 
Calgary is set to host the UBC Thunderbirds in their second Pacific match-up of the weekend while the Vikes will head south to Lethbridge to take on the Pronghorns.

EDMONTON - The #4 Alberta Golden Bears won their fourth consecutive game thanks to a 90-63 thumping of the Mount Royal Cougars, Friday night at the Saville Community Sports Centre.
 
With the win, the Bears maintain their hold on first place in the Canada West Prairie Division, thanks to a 15-2 record. They lead the second place Saskatchewan Huskies by four points, and are tied with the Victoria Vikes for the best overall record in Canada West. Mount Royal, meanwhile, has lost three straight now, and sees their record drop to 7-10 on the season. The Cougars occupy sixth place in the Pacific Division, and are just two points out of a playoff spot.
 
Gardiner's 14 points led MRU, but the Calgary-based Cougars also got double-digit scoring from Awet Abraha (11 points), as well as 10 points each from Deng Awak and Kyle Wilson.
 
Jordan Baker, who last weekend became the U of A's career conference scoring leader, led Alberta's offence with 17 points on the night. He was supported by 16 hard-earned points from rookie Mamadou Gueye, while Joel Friesen and Czar Robotham added 14 and 10 points respectively.
 
Alberta will get back at it tomorrow night, this time at 7:00 pm, when they host the 4-13 UNBC Timberwolves. Mount Royal, on the other hand, continues their road trip by heading to Saskatoon to take on the 13-4 Huskies.

SASKATOON - On the strength of second quarter comeback, the #9 Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the visiting UNBC Timberwolves 87-77 on Friday at the PAC.
 
With the win, Saskatchewan improves to 12-4. UNBC drops to 4-12.
 
Saskatchewan spread the ball around with four players scoring double-digits. Reigning Canada West MVP Stephon Lamar led the charge with 30 points and seven assists, followed by conference leading rebounder Ben Baker tallying a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Jibreel Stevens led the Timberwolves with 29 points, while Charles Barton added 15 and Daniel Stark scored 10. Barton also added seven rebounds.

The Huskies will host the Mount Royal Cougars Saturday night, while the Timberwolves travel to Edmonton to meet the Alberta Golden Bears.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Needing a single victory to clinch a playoff spot, the Lethbridge Pronghorns did just that, downing the visiting UBC Thunderbirds 95-80 at the 1st Choice Savings Centre on Friday.
 
The ‘Horns return to the post-season after a one year hiatus and improve to 12-5 on the season, while the Thunderbirds slip under the .500 mark at 8-9.
 
Alex Fletcher and Logan Reiter led the for the way ‘Horns with matching 25 point nights, while Brandon Brine chipped in with 17 points.
 
A balanced T-Birds attack, with all players scoring at least one basket, saw Harpreet Randhawa come off the bench to lead his team with 13 points, and Andrew McGuinness was the only other T-Bird to hit for double digits with 11 points.
 
The ‘Horns will host the Victoria Vikeson Saturday to conclude the weekend set, while the Thunderbirds will travel north to Calgary to face the Dinos. Tip-off for both games is set for 7:00 p.m. and both will be streamed live on http://canadawest.tv.

Cougars-Cascades Stats

ABBOTSFORD, BC - The Fraser valley Cascades (12-5) beat the egina Cougars (3-14) by a score of 84-71 at the Envision Athletic Centre on friday, pulling away only in the fourth quarter to bag the win.

The Cascades have now won nine straight games, riding the longest streak in program history, as well as the longest active streak in the Canada West. The Cougars, meanwhile, record their fifth straight loss despite an aggressive, competitive effort.
 
Kevon Parchment led the Cascades with a monstrous 36 points, five assists, and three steals. Jasper Moedt finished with 13 points and 12 boards, while Klaus Figueredo also had 13 points. The Cougars were led by Jeremy Zver with 15 points, and Brandon Tull with 14.

The Cascades will play at the EAC again on Saturday, 7 p.m. against the Brandon Bobcats. The Cougars will take on the TWU Spartans in Langley, also at 7 pm.

KAMLOOPS, BC — The Thompson Rivers WolfPack seem to be hitting stride at the right time as they won their third in a row to move to  10-7 on the season following a 75-60 win over the visiting Manitoba Bisons on Friday at the Tournament Capital Centre. The BIsons fall to 4-13.

The WolfPack were led by Reese Pribilsky, with 22 points, four assists and five steals. Ta'Quan Zimmerman had 20 points. Manitoba got 14 points a piece from Andre Arruda and Dan Penner.

The WolfPack entertain the Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday, 7 p.m. at the TCC.  Manitoba goes to Kelowna, BC to face UBC Okanagan on Saturday.

Wesmen-Heat Stats

KELOWNA, BC - Even though the Heat held a sound a sound lead for most of the game, a string of missed shots and thrown possessions late in the third and throughout the fourth quarter allowed the Wesmen to mount a comeback. Ultimately, the Heat would fall in a tough 65-60 ouster at home Friday night.

Second-year Mitch Goodwin wentt 5-5 from three-point range before missing two, wrapping up 6-10 on the night with a game-high 17 points.

Winnipeg's Andrew Cunningham would lead the Wesmen with 12 points, while picking away four steals and grabbing four rebounds. Steven Wesley rounded out the top of the team's box score with 11 points and eight rebounds.

In defeat the Heat are now 3-14 for the season while the Wesmen improve to 12-5, hot on the tail of Saskatchewan for the right to host the first round of playoffs.

on Saturday, the Heat will face the visiting Manitoba Bisons while the Wesmen head to Kamloops for a date with the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. Tip-off at the UBC's Okanagan gymnasium is at 7 p.m.

LANGLEY, BC – With a balanced offence that saw five players collect double-digit point totals, the Trinity Western Spartans earned an 86-80 win over Brandon on Friday at the Langley Events Centre.
 
The Spartans improve to 8-9 on the season. The loss drops Brandon to 5-12.
 
The Spartans were led by Justin Bakuteka, who had 15 points and five rebounds. Kelvin Smith added 14 points and five rebounds.
 
For Brandon, it was Emerick Ravier leading the way with 22 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Ali-Mounir Benabdelhak added 12 points and seven boards.
 
The Spartans are back on the court Saturday when they host Regina at 7 p.m. Brandon will travel to play Fraser Valley Saturday at 7 p.m.
