WSOC | Voyageurs Earn First Points of the Year

Looking to bounce back from a 4-0 defeat on Friday, the Voyageurs women's soccer team came out in their home opener with an extra jump in their step.  That jump led to a strong performance but an unfortunate bounce forced the women to settle for a tie in the end.

The first half saw the Voyageurs carry the majority of the play, keeping constant pressure on McMaster's back line.  Brianne Rodrigue, Océan La Via, and Cass Armstrong continually made penetrating runs but they couldn't quite find the quality final touch that they needed to open the scoring.  At the other end of the field, Hunter Jones stood tall when called upon to send the game into halftime scoreless.

The second half began much the same as the first, with the Marauders' back line bending but not breaking; until the 74th minute.  Awarded a free kick just beyond the top of the 18 yard box, captain Amanda Cuthbert stepped over the ball and confidently deposited a beautiful shot into the top corner for her first tally of the year.  The joy was short lived, however, as McMaster was awarded a free kick of their own just eight minutes later in a similar position at the top of the 18.  The ensuing kick seemed to handcuff Jones as she spilled it inside the 6 yard box and McMaster's Bryanna Caldwell jumped all over it, sliding it across the line to salvage a tie.

The women will look to carry the momentum of earning their first points of the year into Friday's home game against the Algoma Thunderbirds at the James Jerome turf at 4:30pm.
