MONTREAL --
Frédéric Lajoie-Gravelle tallied a hat-trick to lead his Montreal Carabins to a 5-1 victory over McGill 5-1 in RSEQ men's soccer, Thursday, at Stade CEPSUM. The result improved the Carabins to 21-5-10 overall record against the Redmen since joining the league in 2001.
Lajoie-Gravelle, who joined the Carabins last week from FC Montréal, now has five goals in three games. He gave Montreal a 2-0 lead on a 25th minute penalty-kick, added another goal 10 minutes later to make it 3-1, then completed his hat-trick with 10 minutes to go in the match.
Teammate
Aboubacar Sissoko opened the scoring for the Carabins in the 11th minute, and
Hugo Chambon redirected a cornerkick with a header in the 39th minute to give the home side a 4-1 lead by halftime.
Mohamed Kleit, an electrical engineering senior from Outremont, Que., scored McGill's lone goal.
Redmen goalkeeper
Antoine Marchal, a freshman from Montreal, made four stops on nine shots for the loss.
Louis-Philippe Simard saved two of three shots for the victory.
It was a costly setback for the Redmen, who are now sixth in the seven-team league and are on the outskirts of a playoff berth as Montreal leap-frogged from sixth to fourth place. Five games remaining before postseason play and both McGill and Montreal are off until Oct. 14. The Carabins (2-2-3) will take on Laval (4-1-2) in Quebec City, while the Redmen (2-3-1) host first-place UQTR (4-1-2) at Percival Molson Stadium at 8 p.m.
