Canada West Friday men's hockey: Bisons slip past #3 Huskies; Dinos down hometown T-Birds

- Special teams proved to be the difference in a Manitoba 3-2 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday at Rutherford Rink.

The CIS #9 Bisons were 3-6 on the power play in the win over the #3 Huskies.

With the win Manitoba closes the gap to the top of the standings improving to 10-4-3, while the Huskies, who still have one game in hand on the first place Alberta Golden Bears, drop to 13-4. The game was the first of the second half of the Canada West men’s hockey season for both teams.

Manitoba’s Eric Mestery opened the scoring in the game at 9:03 in the first period when he deflected a pass in front of Huskies’ goalie Ryan Holfeld into the net. Del Cowan, Dane Crowley and Tyler Dittmer also scored for the visitors.

Cody Smuk was able to beat Manitoba’s Jesse Deckert and Cody Hobbs added one for Saskatchewan.

Deckert made 18 saves in the win for the Bisons, while Holfeld stopped 20 at the other end of the ice for the Huskies.

The teams meet again Saturday at Rutherford Rink. Puck drop is 7:00 p.m. and the game will be webcast at www.canadawest.tv.

Dinos-Thunderbirds Stats

VANCOUVER - The Calgary Dinos took over fourth spot in the Canada West conference with a 6-2 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday night at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.

The Dinos have now won four straight games, while UBC has lost four of their last five regular season games.

Kevin King opened the scoring for Calgary, with Taylor Stefishen and Walker Wintoneak each scoring twice on the night and Corey Banfield added a single. Stefishen and Wintoneak each had three-point nights. Kodie Curran chipped in with three helpers for the Dinos.

Dustin Butler got the win, making 24 saves, while Jordan White was handed the loss and Steven Stanford came on in relief late in the third period.

Neil Manning and Scott MacDonald scored for UBC.

With the loss UBC falls to fifth place in thd Canada West conference with a record of 9-7-1, one point behind Calgary (10-7-0) and just one point up on sixth place Regina (8-7-2).

These teams will be back in action, 7:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.

REGINA - Carter Selinger and Tyler Penny both scored twice as the Regina Cougars kicked off the second half of the Canada West schedule with a 6-3 win over Lethbridge on Friday at The Co-operators Centre.

Selinger and Penny both added an assist to give them three-point nights, while Craig Cuthbert collected three assists in the win. Tyler Henry and Troy Hunter also scored for Regina, while Chase Schaber had a pair for Lethbridge and Kyle McLachlan also scored for the visitors.

Second-year goalie Lucas Gore made 24 saves in the win for the Cougars.

Dylan Tait got the start between the pipes for Lethbridge (1-14-2) and made 27 saves on 31 shots. Damien Ketlo came in for the third and allowed two goals on 13 shots.

The teams play again on Saturday, 7:00 p.m. at The Co-operators Centre.
