Canada West Friday men's hockey: #1 Huskies win in OT, Bisons defeat Pronghorns

SASKATOON - Saskatchewan defenceman Cody Hobbs scored in overtime to give the #1 Huskies a 2-1 victory over the visiting Regina Cougars on Friday night at Rutherford Rink.

Hobbs shot from the point beat Cougars’ netminder Andrew Hayes 2:36 into the five-minute four-on-four overtime frame for the victory.

With the win the Huskies move to 7-1-0 on the season and sit on a six game winning streak. Regina falls to 5-3-1.

Kenton Dulle finally opened the scoring in the game at 8:42 in the third period when he pounced on the loose puck in a scramble in front of the net. Brayden Nargang tied the game at 15:25.

Despite the loss, Hayes was spectacular in the game making 40 saves for the Cougars. Ryan Holfeld made 25 saves at the other end of the ice for the Huskies.

The teams meet again Saturday in Regina to finish out the home-and-home series.

Dinos-Golden Bears Stats

EDMONTON - Canada West leading-scorer Johnny Lazo had a goal and an assist to help lift the #2 Alberta Golden Bears over the #9 Calgary Dinos on Friday at Clare Drake Arena.

Alberta is now 8-3-0, on a five-game winning streak. The loss drops Calgary to sixth placewith a 5-4-0 record.

Third-year Bears net minder Kurtis Mucha picked up 24 saves in the victory, while veteran Dinos' goalie Dustin Butler made 32 saves in the loss.

On Saturday, the Alberta Golden Bears head south for the second game of their home-at-home series with the Calgary Dinos. Puck drop is at 6 p.m. at Father David Bauer Arena.

WINNIPEG - The Manitoba Bisons (5-3-1), sporting new vibrant white and gold jerseys, earned a point in their fifth consecutive game by downing the winless and Lethbridge Pronghorns (0-8-1) 4-1 on Friday at Max Bell Centre on the campus of the University of Manitoba.
 
Paced by three-point performances from Ian Duval (1G, 2A) and Tyler Dittmer (3A), a two-goal outburst by Blair Macaulay and a 20 save effort by backstop Jesse Deckert, the Bisons never trailed in the contest and looked dominant at both ends of the rink.

The Bisons out shot the visiting Pronghorns 35-21.

Damien Ketlo made 29 saves in the loss.

The two teams will do battle again on Saturday at Max Bell Centre. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.

CALGARY - Cole Wilson recorded a hat-trick Friday to lead the UBC Thunderbirds to a 7-2 win over the Mount Royal Cougarson Friday at Flames Community Arenas.

Also scoring for UBC was Max Grassi, Brad Hoban, Joe Antilla and Scott Wasden. Tyler Jewitt and Mike Brown replied for the Cougars.

The teams play again Saturday at the same rink at 7 p.m.

The Thunderbirds stopped a losing skid at two games and improve to 5-3-1. The Cougars have lost three straight and are 2-9-0 and have given up 20 goals in those three losses.

MRU Cougars
