(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Reds beat the Fanshawe College Falcons in straight sets Sunday to claim top spot in the St. Thomas Tommies' Showcase Tournament.

The Reds 3-0 win in the championship match came with set scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-15.

UNB completed a perfect weekend at the tournament, after beating the Falcons, Sherbrooke College, and the host Tommies in round robin play.

"We showed a lot of growth this weekend," said Reds fourth-year outside hitter Connor McConnell. "With the crew that we have right now, we're a lot of fourth year players, and we've been looking forward to this year for a long time and we're excited to see what's coming up next."

While going unbeaten, the Reds, the only U SPORTS team in the tournament, were tested by the CCAA teams.

"Even though these teams play in the CCAA, they're great teams. They're good teams to play in exhibition, they did put up a fight and kind of gave us a benchmark of where we are right now, and a look at the things we need to do in order to get better."

The Reds continue their exhibition season on Saturday, October 12th, when they host the York Lions. Game time is 7:00pm, at the Richard J. Currie Center.

UNB opens the 2019-2020 RSEQ regular season October 25th, at Sherbrooke.
