Ridgebacks fall to Warriors after wild second period

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Ontario Tech University women's hockey team lost a close game Friday night, falling 4-3 to visiting Waterloo Warriors.

The Ridgebacks entered action after back-to-back games where they opened the scoring under a minute and a half after puck drop. The home team was hungry to repeat that early success, as they applied constant pressure on the Warriors defense and peppered the goaltender with almost 20 shots in the opening period. The home side was rewarded for their efforts, as they headed into the locker room with a 2-0 lead.

The game broke open during the second period as the teams would combine for five goals. The period concluded with a wild finish as four of the five goals came within the final three and a half minutes of the frame. Trailing by a goal, the Ridgebacks opted for the extra attacker late in the third period but could not find the equalizer.

"I thought we played a solid game," said head coach Justin Caruana. "Overall I thought that game was there for us, I thought we played a pretty solid game, minus the couple minutes that cost us."

Ontario Tech has a short turnaround as they host the Laurier Golden Hawks tomorrow afternoon at the Campus Ice Centre.
Katie Heath (Elora, Ont.) opened the scoring at 14:35, taking a pass from Megan Johnston (Goderich, Ont.) and going top corner. Erin Ross (Lucan, Ont.) gave the Ridgebacks the two-goal lead at 16:10 of the first, beating the Warrior netminder under the right arm.
• Emma Pye scored her first of two goals at 9:38 of the second period and later tied the game at 16:43 with her second.
Natalie Wozney (Whitby, Ont.) regained the Ridgebacks lead at 17:45 of the second, after showing patience coming off the side wall and beating the goaltender glove side.
• Taytum Clairmont tied the game back-up at 18:52, with Krystin Lawrence giving the Warriors the lead at 19:07.
Brooke Vial (Port Moody, B.C.) had 25 saves in the loss.
• Alysha Letwin stopped 25 of 28 for the win.
