Huskies defeat Mounties 3-0 for second straight win

SACKVILLE, N.B. – Saint Mary's forwards Sean Freeman and Colby Mercer each scored, and goalkeeper Ryan Davis stopped four shots for the clean sheet, as the Huskies won their second straight game, defeating the Mount Allison Mounties 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in Sackville, NB.

Coming off a gritty 2-0 win over the UPEI Panthers on Saturday, Saint Mary's looked to continue their winning ways on the road. Huskies forward Sean Freeman (Halifax, NS) opened the scoring in ninth minute. Defender Yousef Fatal (Halifax, NS) thumped a ball into Mounties territory, with forward Colby Mercer (Beaverbank, NS) rising up to head the ball back to Freeman, who unleashed a hard volley past the Mounties keeper to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Mounties pressed for an equalizer, but Huskies goalkeeper Ryan Davis (Lake Loon, NS) was in control, denying a shot from Mount Allison forward Damon Gordon. The Huskies nearly doubled their lead in the first half, but midfielder Scott Firth (Windsor Junction, NS) fired a shot off the goal post, and Freeman just missed on the rebound, as Saint Mary's took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Huskies lead would double in the 56th minute, as a Woody Bain corner kick bounced dangerously in the box and ricocheted off of a Mounties defender into the net for an own goal.

Saint Mary's would add to their lead in the 77th minute. After a flurry of action in front of the Huskies goal, a blocked shot was cleared away by substitute forward Tonye Ogon (Bayelsa, Nigeria) finding Sean Freeman in stride up the right wing. Freeman was tripped up in the box by a Mounties defender, with the referee awarding a penalty kick. Former Mounties forward Colby Mercer stepped to the spot and calmly buried it, scoring for the second straight game to push the lead to 3-0.

Davis remained solid in the second half, stopping shots from Mounties midfielders Liam Clark-Black (Dartmouth, NS) and Jack Bennett (Falmouth, NS), as the Huskies held on for the 3-0 win.

Huskies defender Woody Bain was named Player of the Game, with outstanding play on both ends of the pitch.
