(MONCTON, NB) The UNB REDS opened the 2022 Atlantic University Sport season on a winning note, scoring a 3-0 victory over les Aigles Bleues, in Moncton, on Sunday.

Heidi Lauwerijssen (Kensington, PE) scored in the 11th minute to give the REDS an early lead that they'd never surrender.

Lauwerijssen capitalized on a defensive turn-over in the 18-yard box and fired a shot past Moncton keeper Chelsea Burnham (Saint John, NB).

Late in the first half, Madolyn Bush (Ottawa, ON) fed a perfect pass into the middle for Allie Hughes-Goyette (Garibaldi Highlands, BC). The veteran striker made no mistake, redirecting the ball past Burnham to give UNB a 2-0 lead after 45 minutes.

Jillian Larose (Ottawa, ON) rounded out the UNB scoring in the 73rd minute.

"It's great to open the season with a win," said REDS head coach Jon Crossland. "It took us a bit to settle in, but it came together for us. We created some good opportunities and scored some well-built goals."

UNB's Carolina Grzesniak (Oshawa, ON) was an influence throughout the game, registering three shots, collecting a yellow card and earning Subway Player of the Game honours.

Keeper Brynn Nash (Saskatoon, SK) made three saves for the clean sheet.

Burnham made four saves on seven shots in the Moncton net.

"It feels great to be back on the field and playing with this fantastic group of women," said Hughes-Goyette. "Our team is really coming together and it's exciting to see the things we've been working on at training displayed in the game."

"We've got to bring this energy into our next matches," she added.

The 1-and-0 REDS host Dalhousie on Saturday, the first of back-to-back games against the Tigers next weekend.

Moncton will host Acadia the same day.

Both games are scheduled for 1:00pm starts.

"Games only get harder from here," said Crossland. "We're looking forward to being back at BMO Centre and facing a good opponent in Dal."
