(Halifax, NS) At Huskies stadium, the Dalhousie Tigers defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 5-0 in AUS Women's Soccer action.
Neither team developed much offence in the opening minutes of the game, but Dalhousie found their feet first.
In the 22nd minute, Dalhousie's first substitute of the game, Riley Donovan (Toronto, ON) received a long drop kick at centre half and broke off down the left wing with one defender to beat. Donovan rushed to the top corner of the box, then crossed to Kaitlyn Woodworth (Bridgewater, NS) who slipped the ball past a falling Itai Kuwodza and just inside the far post for the first goal of the match.
Kuwodza (Harae, Zimbabwe) was taken from her usual forward position and placed in goal for Saint Mary's in order to cover for recent injuries to regular keepers Kyanna Gills and Grace Morris, both of Halifax. Kuwodza performed admirably in an unfamiliar role, but even an experienced goalkeeper would have had trouble stopping the Dalhousie offence on this day.
The Tigers added a second goal in the 39th minute when Catherine Guevin-Nicoloff (Ottawa, ON) sent a corner kick toward the far post that Rachelle Lalande (Halifax, NS) headed into the back of the net.
Maya Venkataraman (Summerland, BC) potted one more for the Tigers just before the close of the half, scoring off a rebound on the rush in the 44th minute.
In the 2nd half, huskies veteran Fiorella Morales (Bedford, NS) showed some nimble footwork and and explosive quickness in the midfield at times, but the team as a whole was ineffective staging any attacks around the Dalhousie goal.
The Tigers would add two more before the end. In the 73rd minute, Guevin-Nicoloff set up Alyson Bodner (Edmonton, AB) for a volley in the box that made it 4-0, then scored herself on a penalty kick in the 86th minute for the fifth and final goal of the match.
Both teams are off now until Friday, when Dalhousie (2-3-0) will host UNB and Saint Mary's (1-5-0) will play St. Francis Xavier.
