Bisons stampede past Pronghorns in men's hockey

Manitoba defeats Lethbridge 3-0

Box Score After being swept last weekend in Regina, the Manitoba Bisons men's hockey team (3-7-1) rebounded Friday, November 15 night against the Lethbridge Pronghorns (1-10-0) with a 3-0 win at Wayne Fleming Arena (U of M campus).

Luke Cain, Jory Coates, and Aaron Lewadniuk all scored for the Bisons. Manitoba's Joe Caligiuri made 17 saves for the shutout while Dylan Tait stopped 40 of 43 shots in defeat.
Penalties almost got the Bisons into trouble late in the first period as Lethbridge had almost two full minutes with the two-man advantage, but the Bisons' penalty kill stepped up big time to ward off the Pronghorns' effort.

"A big turning point was killing off that 5-on-3," said Bisons men's hockey head coach Mike Sirant following the game. "Guys stepped up and really played with a lot of courage, made some great blocks, and we used that to get the momentum."

Even with the time shorthanded, Manitoba managed to outshoot Lethbridge 17-6 in the first frame.
Penalties continued for Manitoba in the second, but Lethbridge, even with plenty of power play opportunities, were unable to manufacture shots on net.

The Bisons finally broke the deadlock with Luke Cain's second of the season at 15:56 of the second period. Craig Scott and Dylan Kelly added the assists.

Cain's goal opened the gates for the Bisons, who kept the pressure on for the remainder of the second period. Jory Coates scored his first career CIS goal at 18:46, and the Bisons took a 2-0 lead into the locker room.

After two periods the shots were 33-9 Manitoba.

In the third period Manitoba carried on from where they left off. Aaron Lewadniuk scored his team leading fourth goal of the season 26 seconds into the frame, and the Bisons never looked back.

The final shots were 43-17 Manitoba.

The two teams will go at it again tomorrow night at 6 p.m. CT at Wayne Fleming Arena (live webcast on canadawest.tv).  All Canada West hockey games now have livestats, found on www.leaguestat.com/canadawest/mens/en/stats/schedule.php
