Gryphons drop home game to Hawks 4-1

The Guelph Gryphon's women's hockey team took on the Laurier Golden Hawks tonight (Nov. 17th) in Guelph at the Gryphon Centre. This game saw the top two OUA teams face off, with Laurier taking the 4-1 win.

The Golden Hawks remain undefeated in regulation and move to 10-0-1, while the Gryphons drop their first game after a four game winning streak, down to 10-3-1.

Laurier came into the game determined to take out the Gryphons, and had the majority of the possession right from the start. The Golden Hawks first goal came from Tammy Freiburger (Wingham, ON) who shot into the right corner after she was set up by Alicia Martin (Etobicoke, ON) and Katherine Shirriff (Carrying Place, ON) at 6:18 in the first.

The Golden Hawks had full control of the ice and the Gryphons didn't get their first shot on net until the 13th minute. Laurier's second goal of the game at 15:25 was set up by Abby Rainsberry (Petrolia, ON) and Caitlin Muirhead (Waterloo, ON) after a pile-up outside of the Gryphon net gave Laura Booker (Fergus, ON) the perfect opportunity to sneak it in.

Vanessa Schabkar (Etobicoke, ON) scored on Gryphon goalie Brooke Siddall (Windsor, ON) after being assisted by Danielle Im (Toronto, ON) and Heather Fortuna (Kitchener, ON) at 9:14 in the second.

Gryphon centre Victoria Head (Kanata, ON) had an amazing shot on net 12 minutes in, after a breakaway down the left wing gave her full reign, but it was deflected out. The Golden Hawks responded with their fourth goal of the game at 17:36 from Rainsberry who forced the puck in despite Siddall trying to catch it.  The second finished with only eight shots on net from the Gryphons, and 30 from the Golden Hawks.

The Gryphons came in stronger for the third and had a great opportunity for a goal when players scrambled outside of the Golden Hawk net and multiple shots were fired onto Laurier goalie Erika Thunder (Buffalo Point, MB). Erin Small (Pickering, ON) finally scored Guelph's first and only goal of the game and her 11th of the season at 3:55 with help from Tamara Bell (Guelph, ON). Small shot over Thunder's left shoulder and it skimmed over her glove into the back of the net. Despite this morale boosting goal, the Gryphons were soon out of time to add anymore and the game finished 4-1 for the Golden Hawks.

The Gryphons next play the UOIT Ridgebacks in Oshawa on Nov. 25th. The game begins at 7:30pm.
