OH HAPPY DAY! BLUES DOWN HAWKS IN OT

Box Score Fourth-year forward Taylor Day scored 3:46 into double overtime to lift the No. 4 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday night (Feb. 12) at Varsity Arena.

With the win, the Blues improve to 10-4-4-3 and remain in third place with two games in hand over the Nipissing Lakers (12-1-5-5).

Fifth-year forward Sonja Weidenfelder opened the scoring midway through the first period when she buried a Kristi Riseley rebound and Toronto held a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Laurier evened the score late in the second period, as fourth-year forward Robyn Degagne notched a powerplay marker. The game was deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the final frame.

The next 25 minutes solved nothing as the game headed into 3-on-3 overtime and Day proved to be the hero.

Rookie netminder Valencia Yordanov made 20 saves in the victory.

The Varsity Blues are back in action this Sunday, February 14 as they travel to Kingston, Ont., to take on the Queen's Gaels.
