The Gee-Gees men's hockey team put in a complete performance Sunday night, beating the Concordia Stingers 4-2 after a tough, 2-1 loss on Friday away to UQTR. The result sees the Gee-Gees rise into a tie for second in the conference with the Stingers after four games.
The Gee-Gees travelled to Trois-Rivières Friday to take on the Patriotes for the first time this season. The Garnet and Grey opened the scoring in the first period thanks to some nice passing by the Gee-Gees first line. Charles-Antoine Roy, receiving a pass down low from Gee-Gees captain Yvan Mongo at 7:24 and made no mistake sliding it five-hole on UQTR goalie Tristan Cote-Cazenave. The Patriotes scored just over a minute later through William Leblanc. Leblanc would grab a second before the end of the period to give UQTR the victory.
The Garnet and Grey were looking for a bounce back on Sunday night and that is exactly what they had. After a sloppy first period, the Gee-Gees were able to break through on the powerplay thanks to a Mongo tip in front on a Cody Van Lierop point shot.. That is the first powerplay goal the Gee-Gees have scored this season. A cross-body shot just minutes after the restart further extended the lead for the Garnet and Grey. The Stingers kept buzzing though pulling one back before the end of the period.
The Gee-Gees entered the third period looking to hold onto their one-goal lead but an offensive flurry saw Van Lierop grab his first goal since Jan. 19, 2019. The goal would ultimately be what separated the two teams after Kyle Havlena scored for Concordia. Branden Makara potted the empty netter put the game beyond doubt. Van Lierop finished with one goal and two assists in what was a heroic night.
"That is our league, it's all been one-goal games," said Gee-Gees head coach Pat Grandmaître. "I didn't like our start and fortunately our powerplay came through today and got us a big goal.
"It was a quite even game, but our goalie was good, Cody Van Lierop was amazing tonight. It takes guys like that stepping up."
The Garnet and Grey will be back in action with a home-and-home against the Carleton Ravens. The Gee-Gees are at the Ice House Thursday, Nov. 18 before returning to the Minto Sports Complex Saturday, Nov. 20 - both games get underway at 7 p.m.
