VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds men's hockey team kept their playoff aspirations alive with a crucial victory over the #10 Saskatchewan Huskies by a 5-1 margin on Saturday.

Geordie Wudrick unleashed a three-point night including a pair of goals while Cole Wilson added to his team lead in points collecting a goal and two assists as the Thunderbirds snapped the Huskies five-game winning streak. The victory moves UBC to within two points of the final playoff spot in the Canada West with two games remaining on the schedule.
 
Derek Hulak scored the lone goal for the visitors.

UBC's Steven Stanford got the win in goal. Ryan Holfeld stopped 19 shots and took the loss.
 
UBC (10-14-2) honoured two graduating players, Ilan Cumberbirch and Matt Wray, tonight. Though currently out with a concussion, Cumberbirch played three seasons appearing in 46 regular season games after transferring from the University of Saskatchewan.  Wray suited up for the Thunderbirds in 34 games during his four-year tenure with the blue and gold.
 
Thanks to a weekend sweep at the hands of the Alberta Golden Bears, the Regina Cougars sit just two points ahead of the Thunderbirds. The Cougars are in tough against the third-place Saskatchewan Huskies (15-10-1) for a deciding weekend series next week.

REGINA - Sean Ringrose scored twice and Kurtis Mucha made 19 saves to lift the #1 Alberta Golden Bears men's hockey team past the Regina Cougars 5-2 on Saturday night.
 
Drew Nichol, Brett Ferguson and Jordan Hickmott also scored for Alberta. Tyler Henry and Ward Szucki found the back of the net for the Cougars, while Lucas Gore turned aside 38 shots in a losing effort.
 
With the win the Golden Bears improve to 23-2-1 and now lead second-place Calgary by two points. They'll play a home-and-home series with the Dinos next weekend to wrap up their regular season schedule. Both the Golden Bears and the Dinos will have a bye in the first round of the Canada West playoffs.
 
The Cougars see their record fall to 11-13-2. They'll wrap up their regular season next weekend with a home-and-home series against Saskatchewan. The puck drops in Saskatoon at 7 p.m. on Friday and at 7 p.m. on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Coming off a decisive victory Friday night, the Manitoba Bisons completed the weekend sweep of the Lethbridge Pronghorns with a 6-3 win.

The Bisons got goals from six different goal scorers as Aaron Lewadniuk, Taylor Dickin, Dylan Kelly, Lee Christensen, Craig Scott and Brendan Rowinski all notched singles on the night, while Brock Hirsche, Ryon Moser and Tim Campbell responded for the Pronghorns.

With the win the Bisons move to .500 on the season at 11-11-4 and the ‘Horns fall to 2-21-3, with only week remaining in their season.

Dylan Tait went the distance in goal for the ‘Horns turning aside 46 shots. Joe Caligiuri earned the win the Bisons crease with a 26-save performance.

The ‘Horns to wrap up their season next weekend with a home-and-home series with the Mount Royal Cougars, while the Bisons will have also will have one final weekend as well before they head into playoff and will host the visiting UBC Thunderbirds.

REGINA - The #1 Alberta Golden Bears went ahead early in the first on a goal by Drew Nichol and never looked back as they skated to a 5-0 win over the Regina Cougars on Friday.
 
Johnny Lazo, Travis Toomey, Torrie Dyck and Jordan Hickmott also scored for Alberta, while Kurtis Mucha made 23 saves between the pipes for his third shutout of the year. Andrew Hayes turned aside 32 shots in a losing effort for the Cougars.

First-place Alberta is 22-2-1 and already guarantted to host a semifinal series, while the Cougars are now 11-12-2, in a three-way tie for fourth place. Six teams make playoffs.

The teams play again on Saturday at The Co-operators Centre, 7 p.m.

#3 Calgary 5 Mount Royal 2

CALGARY – A three-goal performance from Taylor Stefishen helped the #3 Calgary Dinos pick up a 5-2 victory over the Mount Royal Cougars in Crowchild Classic action.

The Dinos improve their record to 21-2-3 on the season with two games remaining. Mount Royal drops to 11-13-2 in a log jam for post season positioning.

The Dinos close out the 2013-14 season next week with a home-and-home versus the #1 Golden Bears. The final road game will be played on Feb. 14 in Edmonton, starting at 7 p.m. The teams will get a day off before going at it again on Feb. 16 at the Father David Bauer Arena with a 6 p.m. puck drop.
 
Mount Royal will also finish the year with a home-and-home. The Cougars will play the last-placed Lethbridge Pronghorns at home on Feb. 14 before traveling to Lethbridge for their final game of the regular season.

VANCOUVER – The #10 Saskatchewan Huskies continued their hot play as of late as they defeated the UBC Thunderbirds by a score of 3-1 on Friday night to extend their winning streak to five games.

Kendall McFaull, Connor Cox and Craig McCallum found the net for the visitors, who clinched third place in the Canada West, while Geordie Wudrick had the lone goal for the Thunderbirds.
 
Hewitt got the start in goal for the Thunderbirds for just the third time since mid-November and made 24 saves Friday night. At the other end, Holfeld made his 24th start on the season stopping all but one in a 26-save victory in game one of the weekend series.
 
Saskatchewan improves to 14-9-1 and have third place in the Canada West locked up currently with 31 points on the season. UBC falls to 9-14-2 sitting four points back of Manitoba, Mount Royal and Regina, all tied for fourth with 24 points. With three games remaining on the schedule, the Thunderbirds need a bit of help from their division rivals to sneak into the playoff picture.
 
The two teams clash again Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in what will be the Thunderbirds final home game of the regular season.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Three goals in the opening ten minutes of play put the wheels in motion for the Manitoba Bisons, who went on to post an impressive 8-2 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns, Friday at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

Brenden Rowinski and Jesse Paradis each netted individual markers for Manitoba while Jordan DePape and Jory Coates took care of the other six goals, each earning three a piece on the night. Daniel Iwanski and Daniel Fainmann each scored for Lethbridge.

Alex Sirard got the start for the Horns and faced 33 shots prior to being replaced by Dylan Tait, who entered the game at the start of the third period. Tait turned aside 11 of the 14 shots he faced.

Joe Caligiuri started in net for Manitoba and looked strong between the pipes, turning aside all but two of the 33 shots he faced on the night.

With this win, the Bisons improve to 10-11-4 and moved into a three-way tie for fourth in the conference, while the Pronghorns fall to 2-20-3.

CALGARY – In front of the CIS record-breaking crowd of 6,016 people the Mount Royal University Cougars defused a late third period comeback by upsetting the #3 University of Calgary Dinos at the Scotiabank Saddledome, 4-3 in overtime.

After establishing a 3-1 lead in the first period, Mount Royal looked well on their way to another big win against the Dinos. Chris Collins had other plans though as the Canada West-leading goal scorer collected two late goals to send the game into overtime. In the extra frame, Devin Gannon scored his second of the game to pick up the win for his club. The victory was the Cougars' second-straight against the Dinos in their Crowchild Classic meeting at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Gannon had two gioals, two assists on the night. Walker Wintoneak also replied for Calgary.

Kris Lazaruk started and gave up the first three goals by Mount Royal, with Jacob DeSerres taking the loss in relief. Dalyn Flette got the victory in goal for MRU.

With their third-straight defeat, the Dinos fall to 20-2-3 on the season. Mount Royal improves to 11-12-2 and into a fourth-place tie with the Regina Cougars in the conference standings.
