(St. John's, NL) The UNB Reds earned a split in the weekend series with the Memorial Sea-Hawks with a 107-100 OT victory from The Field House in St. John's.
The Reds came out firing on Sunday, with revenge on their mind after the Saturday night loss. Ibrahima Doumbouya led the way for UNB to start the game, scoring 8 points in the first quarter on perfect 3/3 shooting from the field (2/2 3PT). Doumbouya's strong play helped spark the vistors and earn them a 30-21 lead after one quarter of play.
The Hawks responded in the second quarter behind some great inside play from 2nd year post Boris Ristanovic. The Memorial big man had 5 points in the quarter to lead the way for the Hawks. But it was UNB who once again controlled the game, behind some hot shooting from Chris Spurrell. Spurrell was 5 of 6 in the quarter from the field and a perfect 3 for 3 from downtown to finish with 14 in the frame. The Reds led at half 57-46
Memorial battled back after the break and held UNB to a 10 point quarter. The Hawks put up 21 in the quarter, which would pull them even at 67 going into the final frame.
The fans were treated to a great fourth between the two teams with 6 lead changes in the first 6 minutes of the quarter. Memorial started to pull away and took an 85-79 lead with 2:46 left to play, but rookie Marcus Masters made some clutch baskets down the stretch including a 3-pointer with 1:44 left to tie the game. The game would go into OT tied 87-87.
Masters strong play continued in the extra frame, scoring 12 points to bring his total points to 28 on the day. The rookie guard also grabbed 4 rebounds and dished out 2 assists. He would be named Subway Player of the Game for his efforts.
Chris Spurrell was a big contributor for UNB finishing with 23 points, while Matur Maluach had a double-double, securing 11 rebounds and adding 11 points.
Memorial was led by Nathan Barker who dropped 25 points and pulled down 11 boards. Cole Long also had a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Memorial will travel to Sydney next weekend for a 2-game series with the CBU Capers.
