Ridgebacks lose heartbreaker to No. 5 ranked Varsity Blues

TORONTO, Ont. – The Ontario Tech University women's hockey team were on the wrong side of a tight 3-2 game Friday night against the No. 5 ranked Toronto Varsity Blues.

The Ridgebacks were determined right off the opening faceoff, pressing the home side with great offensive zone time. The great start was rewarded, as the visitors took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. The home side showed why they were nationally ranked, as they used special teams to cut into the Ridgebacks lead and even the score after 40 minutes.

Despite chances the score remained even late into regulation, however, it was the home Varsity Blues that broke the tie with just 31 seconds remaining.

Ontario Tech remain in Toronto for action tomorrow night against the Ryerson Rams.
Nicole Escano (Kingston, Ont.) opened the scoring with her first career OUA goal at 4:57 tapping in the back-door feed from Megan Johnston (Goderich, Ont.). Alex Frigon (Dartmouth, N.S.) was left alone in front of the net and banged home a loose puck just 11 seconds after Escano's goal.
• Stephanie Ayres cut the score to 2-1 on the power play at 3:41 of the second, while Taylor Trussler evened the game at 16:41 of the period.
• Breanna Berndsen had the game winner at 19:28 of the third period.
Celine Tessier (Chapleau, Ont.) appeared in her first game of the season, stopping 32 shots.
• Madeline Albert made 20 saves in the win.
