MHKY | Voyageurs Bounce Back to Down Gaels
The Laurentian Voyageurs played their second game of the season against the Queen's Gaels this Saturday afternoon in front of a packed Laurentian homecoming crowd.
The Voyageurs came out hot from the moment the clock started leaving the Gaels unable to get their high-caliber offense started. Although, nothing more then a few penalties were recorded in the first frame the Voyageurs peppered the Gaels' Luke Richardson with a total of fifteen shots versus the Gaels eight on Mackenzie Savard.
Just four minutes into the second period the Voyageurs' Hayden Hopkins picked up a loose puck in stride and elected to shoot on a broken down Gaels defensive line. The puck would beat Richardson low pad and give the Vees a 1-0 lead. Zach Wilkie and Russel Nowry would pick up the assists.
The Gaels highly efficient power play would not stay at bay for long as Duncan Campbell would curl into the high-slot and beat Savard with a hard, bar-down wrist shot for the tie.
The third period was action packed to say the least as the Voyageurs would score three goals within the period as the offence was operating at full speed. Ben Morris would score his first OUA goal after hammering home a rolling rebound after the towering Jarret Meyer toe-dragged his opponent and set up a scoring play. David Elford would pick up the second assist on the goal.
The second goal would come from Brett Jacklin, the two day old Voyageur. Known for his wicked shot, he would also score his first OUA goal after electing to shoot on a two-on-one and pick the far corner from the top of the circle beating Richardson putting the Voyageurs up 3-1.
With over five-hundred electric Voyageurs fans in the stands, the Vees would hold off a last ditch effort Gaels offence and Savard would stop thirty-eight of thirty-nine shots on the night.
With just five seconds Luke McCaw added insult to injury and scored the final goal on an empty net attempt.
The Vees would take the second game of their season making for a 1-1 record and beating the reigning Queen's Cup champions. The Lakehead Thunderwolves will make the one-thousand kilometre journey from Thunder Bay to play the Vees at Countryside on October 11th and 12th at 7:30pm each night.
