Heat-Dinos Stats

CALGARY – The Calgary Dinos rode strong performances from rookie Keith West and veteran Connor Frehlich to a straight-sets win over the UBC Okanagan Heat on Sunday afternoon (25-21, 25-22, 25-17) to wrap up the calendar year in Canada West men's volleyball action.
 
The win improves the Dinos' record to 7-5 and in a tie for fifth place in Canada West at the Christmas break, while UBC Okanagan falls to 2-10 on the campaign.
 
West had easily his best outing as a Dino, picking up 15 kills on 24 swings and hitting 37.5 per cent on the afternoon. Frehlich added nine kills for Calgary, while Greg Mann put down eight to follow up on his solid performance in Calgary's 3-2 victory Saturday night.
 
For UBC Okanagan, Nate Speijer was again the leader with 14 kills, seeing 31 balls set his way – nearly double that of his closest teammates. Kyle Pankratz added six kills for the Heat, while Lars Bornemann added five to the Heat's cause.
 
Both teams take an extended break for December exams and return to Canada West action Jan. 10-11. The Heat will host provincial rival UBC for a two game set that weekend, while the Dinos will also play at home with the Manitoba Bisons in town to visit the Jack Simpson Gym.

The Dinos will host the 2014 CIS men's volleyball championship in the Jack, February 27 to March 1.

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars fell 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 26-24) to the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Saturday night at Kenyon Court. 

Casey Knight and Brad Gunter had 17 and 16.5 points for TRU. Colton de Man had a game high 19.5 points and Jordan Parkin added 10 for the Cougars.

Mount Royal now holds a record of 6-6 while the WolfPack improve to 8-4.

TRU will host Brandon on January 10th and 11th when they get back from the holiday break. The Cougars will head to Langley to play the top ranked Trinity Western Spartans that same weekend.

BRANDON, MB - The CIS #5 Brandon Bobcats outlasted the #10 Saskatchewan Huskies in a five-set match on Saturday to end the first-half of the season on a high note, winning 3-2 (21-25, 25-17, 25-21, 16-25, 15-12).

With the win Brandon improves to 7-5, while Saskatchewan falls to 4-8.
 
Sam Tuivai led the attack for the Bobcats contributing 20 kills, nine digs, and five blocks. First-year middle Ty Moorman added nine kills and seven blocks for the ‘Cats, with Roy Ching chipping in with eight kills, 14 digs, and three blocks.
 
Jordan Nowakowski led Saskatchewan's attack with 23 kills, eight digs, and three blocks. Paul Thompson added 14 kills and 15 digs, while setter Emory Wells notched 61 assists for the Huskies.
 
Brandon will resume in the new year with road games against Thompson Rivers and UBC-Okanagan, while the Huskies will welcome the Winnipeg Wesmen.

WINNIPEG - The #6 Manitoba Bisons were defeated by the #2 Trinity Western Spartans by a score of 3-2 in their second game of the weekend on Saturday at Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of Manitoba campus).

In an exciting five set thriller, the Spartans had two players with double digits in kills. Trinity Western's Lucas Van Berkel led the way with 16 kills followed by Nicholas Del Bianco with 12 kills and two service aces. Branden Schmidt chipped in for the Spartans as well with five kills and three service aces. On the Manitoba side, three players finished with double digits in kills. Devren Dear finished with 17 kills followed by Adam DeJonckheere with 16, and Kevin Falconer with 11.

After the win, Trinity Western improves to 11-1 while Manitoba dropped to 5-7 in the Canada West regular season standings

The Bisons will take their winter break before travelling to Calgary to play the Dinos on January 10, 2014. The Spartans will also take their winter break before hosting Mount Royal on January 10.

Golden Bears-Wesmen Stats

WINNIPEG - Alberta completed a weekend sweep over the Winnipeg Wesmen but it was not easy on this night. The #4 Golden Bears beat the Wesmen 3-1 (25-17, 19-25, 25-13, 28-26) on Saturday.

Alberta who won the series opening match in three sets Friday night, improve their record to 8-4. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 5-7.

Third year left side Ryley Barnes led Albertawith 13 kills and three service aces. Jay Olmstead and John Goranson each had 12 kills while Kevin Proudfoot finished with 11. Goranson led the way at the net with seven blocks. Brendan Yao had 12 digs playing in the libero position.

Second year outside Casey Schouten led the Wesmen with a match high 14 kills. Tom Douglas-Powell added 13 kills and a pair of service aces. Middle Matthew Dueck was strong at the net with five blocks. Riley Delavau led Winnipeg in digs with nine.

Alberta will resume play in January against the Regina Cougars. Winnipeg will visit the Saskatchewan Huskies to open the second half.

REGINA – The UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Regina Cougars in three sets for the second time in as many nights on Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
 
UBC (9-3) used a quick 7-1 run to turn a two-point deficit into a six-point lead midway through the opening set and led by as many as eight points before the Cougars put together a late rally with Joel Legasse serving to get to within three at 23-20, but a Quentin Schmidt kill gave UBC the early lead in the match with a 25-21 win.
 
The Thunderbirds took control of the second set early and cruised to a convincing 25-14 win, then overcame a four-point Cougar advantage in the third with a big 13-3 run around the technical timeout and picked up a 25-21 victory to clinch the match.
 
Ben Chow, Alex Russell, and Schmidt all ended up with 10 kills for UBC, with Russell also being charged with just two errors on 15 attacks as he raises his Canada West-leading hitting percentage to an impressive .457 for the season. Setter Milan Nikic had 35 assists, seven digs, and four blocks.
 
Andrew Nelson led the Cougars (0-12) with 13 kills, while Legasse provided a spark off the bench with five kills and a team-high .417 hitting percentage to go along with a pair of service aces.

Both teams will now have five weekends off from the Canada West schedule before returning to conference play in January.

CALGARY - Greg Mann's 24 kills were the difference maker in the Calgary's 3-2 (24-26, 22-25, 26-24, 25-18, 15-13) win over the UBC Okanagan Heat on Saturday at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

The Dinos now improve to 6-5 with one game left in the calendar year, while the UBC Okanagan heat drop to 2-9. This marks the fifth, fifth-set match the Dinos have won so far this season. They are currently 5-2 in fifth-set matches in the 2013-14 season.

In one of his best performances of the season thus far, Mann scored a team-high 24 kills in the match and recorded five digs. Connor Frehlich also hit double digits once again with 13 kills and he had 13 block assists. Libero Cory Meeuwisse recorded a game-high 12 digs in the match and setter Alex Cook recorded 44 assists and seven digs in Calgary's win.

For the Heat, Nate Speijer scored an outstanding 31 kills for a game-high Kyle Pankratz followed that up with 10 kills of his own. Colten Litwin recorded 10 digs for UBC Okanagan.

The Dinos and the Heat will face each other on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in their last game of the first half of the season before the Christmas break.

WINNIPEG - The #2 Trinity Western Spartans were victorious on the road against the #6 Manitoba Bisons by a 3-0 score (25-20, 25-19, 25-17) in a battle of two top ranked teams in the country on Friday at Investors Group Athletic Centre ( U of Manitoba campus).

In a solid and efficient win by the visitors, Trinity Western has now won three in a row and moved their record to 10-1 while Manitoba fell to 5-6 in the Canada West season.

For the Spartans, Nicolas Del Bianco had 13 kills on .500 hitting percentage while Brad Kufske added 11 kills (on .500 hitting percentage) with four digs. Setter Adam Schriemer added 26 assists with six digs.

Kevin Falconer led the Bisons with eight kills and six digs while Adam DeJonckheere with seven kills and six digs.
 
Both teams meet again on Satruday at 7 p.m. on the same court.

The Golden Bears improve their record to 7-4. Winnipeg with the loss falls below .500 with a record of 5-6.

Ryley Barnes led the Golden Bears with a match high 14 kills. He finished the match with a hitting percentage of .700. John Goranson, Kevin Proudfoot and Jay Olmstead each finished with seven. Proudfoot led Alberta with seven blocks.

Winnipeg was led by Casey Schouten with nine kills. Tom Douglas-Powell and Matthew Dueck each had seven. Riley Delavau finished with a match high eight kills.

The teams will meet Saturday night in the early match of the evening at 6:00 p.m.

REGINA - Quentin Schmidt had 11 kills and fell one dig short of a double-double as the CIS #3 UBC Thunderbirds took a three-set victory over the Regina in Canada West men's volleyball action on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

UBC took the match by scores of 25-15, 25-19, and 25-21 as the Thunderbirds improve their conference record to 8-3 and stay one win ahead of Alberta and Thompson Rivers for second place.

Besides Schmidt's near double-double, UBC also had an eight-kill performance from Mac McNicol as the second-year middle led all players with a .545 hitting percentage. Libero Ian Perry had a match-high 16 digs.

Andrew Nelson led the Cougars (0-11) in kills for the sixth consecutive match, tying Schmidt for the match lead with 11 while leading all players with 34 total attacks. Andre Borgeaud had a team-high 13 digs.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS following the conclusion of the women's match. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Sam Tuivai put up a double-double for the ‘Cats with 17 kills and 13 digs, while Roy Ching added 12 kills and three blocks.
 
Paul Thomson notched 18 kills and 15 digs for the Huskies. Bryan Fraser chipped in with 15 kills and 13 digs, while Braden McLean added 12 kills and seven blocks.
 
The two teams face off againon Saturday at 6:45 p.m.
