MONTREAL --
Lea Chastenay-Joseph of Donnacona, Que., scored twice and added an assist as the No.1 ranked Laval Rouge et Or defeated McGill 3-1 in CIS women's soccer at Molson Stadium, Friday.
Laval, which dominated with a 13-2 advantage in shots on net and a 5-0 margin in cornerkicks, remains undefeated and tied atop the RSEQ conference standings with Sherbrooke as both teams improved to 4-0-1 in the eight-team league.
It took only five minutes for
Chastenay-Joseph to set up
Cynthia Turcotte of Quebec City for the first goal in the fifth minute of play. Undaunted, the Martlets responded less than a minute later when team captain
Rebecca Green of Green's Harbour, Nfld., broke away from the pack down the left side and fired a right-footed rocket to even the score at 1-1.
After halftime,
Chastenay-Joseph struck twice, in the 51st and 64th minute, to put the contest out of reach.
"Obviously a loss was not what we were looking for but in terms of effort, my hat's off to our girls because we pushed hard until the final whistle," said
Jose-Luis Valdes, head coach of the Martlets."We had a couple of chances, especially early in the second half and pressured them knowing that we risked a counter (play on a quick transition) and that's what led to their second and third goals."
McGill had a chance to tie the score at 2-2 when sniper
Audrey-Ann Couglin, who entered the contest with seven goals in the first four games, had a free kick but shje hit the crossbar on the play.
Goalkeeper
Marie-Joelle Vandal needed only one save to collect the victory for Laval, whiel
Cassandra Fafalios made 10 saves in a losing cause for McGill.
McGill, which tumbled to 3-2-0, has a day to regroup before heading across the slopes of Mt. Royal to take on the Montreal Carabins (3-0-2) at Terrain Vincent d'Indy.
