VANCOUVER – The CIS #9-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies outscored the UBC Thunderbirds 39-34 on Saturday in an entertaining, back and forth Canada West regular season football game in Vancouver, boradcast live on Shaw TV and www.canadawest.tv.

Two fourth quarter touchdowns allowed the visiting Huskies to leave David Sidoo Field at Thunderbird Stadium with its second victory of the season to against one loss. UBC drops to 0-3.

Saskatchewan's Kit Hillis caught 14 Drew Burko passes for 224 yards and three scores, one short of the single-game conference record for receptions and just shy of the top 10 single-game receiving yard totals.

Mitch Stevens hauled in a 15-yard major from Burko, who ended up with four TD passes in the game, at 4:43 to put the visiting Huskies up 36-31, a play that would end up as the winning score.

A T-Birds Homecoming crowd of 2,647 saw UBC fall to 0-3, with Saskatchewan moving to 3-0.

Taylor Souster, Billy Greene and Jordan Grieve found the end zone for the home side. Chase Bradshaw and Mitch Stevens had touchdowns for Saskatchewan aside from the trio by Hillis. 

Things do not get any easier for the T-Birds, as #2 Calgary (3-0) arrives for a game in Vancouver next Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Saskatchewan (2-1) will host provincial rival Regina (2-1), 7:00 p.m. on Friday in Shaw TV's "Game of the Week", also available on www.canadawest.tv.

Dinos-Bisons Stats

WINNIPEG – The seventh-ranked Manitoba Bisons hung tight for three quarters with the CIS #2-ranked Calgary Dinos on Saturday afternoon, but a 17-point fourth put it out of reach as Calgary took a 33-12 win at University Stadium.

The win improves Calgary to 3-0 on the season and gives the Dinos sole possession of first place in Canada West, while Manitoba falls to 2-1.

Fourth-year Calgary receiver Chris Dobko set a school record with 13 catches on the day, breaking his own previous total of 12. Those 13 catches accounted for 182 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner from 33 yards early in the third quarter. Third-year quarterback Eric Dzwilewski, meanwhile, posted his best passing game in CIS, completing 23 of 32 passes for 329 yards and three majors.

For the Bisons, QB Cam Clark went just 10-of-27 passing for 211 yards, the lion’s share of which came on that 80-yard major by Xavier Johnson. Kienan LaFrance had 18 carries for 119 yards. The Dinos managed to pick him off three times, with Wyatt Getty and Jamahl Knowles joining Klassen in getting their hands on errant Manitoba passes.

The Bisons remain home next week to host the winless Alberta Golden Bears, while Calgary heads back on the road to face the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver. Kickoff is 3:00 p.m. MT on Saturday, Sept. 22 from Thunderbird Stadium.

EDMONTON – The CIS #10 Regina Rams were tested on the road by the winless Alberta Golden Bears, but were able to pull away in the fourth quarter for a 31-17 win on Friday in Canada West action at Foote Field.
 
The teams went into the fourth quarter tied at 10 apiece, but Rams quarterback Marc Mueller threw two touchdown passes and rushed for another on a quarterback sneak and Kirby Kezama grabbed a pair of interceptions in the final frame to help seal the victory.
 
The Rams improve to 2-1 on the season and will move into a tie for second place in the Canada West standings with the loser of Saturday’s Calgary/Manitoba game. Alberta falls to 0-3 on the year.
 
Kezama was called upon to make his debut as a CIS kicker, hitting one of his two field goal attempts and all four of his point-after attempts to score the first seven points of his University of Regina career.
 
Mueller ended up completing 26 of his 38 pass attempts in the win, throwing for a total of 316 yards and tossing TD passes to Jay Smith, Catlin Schneider and Connor Haas.
 
Bears pivot Curtis Dell was 17-for-32 for Alberta and ended up with 206 yards, but threw two interceptions. The third-year QB rushed nine times for 78 yards and also scoring a late touchdown. Dillon Prince scored the other major/
 
Alberta will now prepare for a road game at #7 Manitoba (2-0) next Saturday, while the Rams will hit the road again for a Friday night game against #9 Saskatchewan (1-1).
