Special teams the difference as Gee-Gees top Ridgebacks

OTTAWA, Ont. – Both goalies were perfect for nearly 42 minutes before a power play goal propelled the Ottawa Gee-Gees to a 2-0 win over the Ontario Tech University men's hockey team.

It was the final game of the first semester for the Ridgebacks, who captured a point the previous night against the No. 3 Carleton Ravens, but came up short in Sunday's matinee affair. Both teams exploded out of the gate with high energy, as the action was back-and-forth, but the netminders stood tall.

Awarded two power plays throughout the second frame the Ridgebacks failed to convert on either, as the teams continued to skate to a standstill. The home team capitalized on their second power play of the game early in the third, breaking the tie, before neutralizing every Ridgeback attempt to end the game.

Ontario Tech will enjoy the holiday break before returning to the ice January 4 as they travel south of the boarder to play the Robert Morris Colonials. The Ridgebacks resume OUA action January 9 in Sudbury as they take on the Laurentian Voyageurs.
  • Medric Mercier found the net on the power play at 1:41 of the third period, to give the Gee-Gees the 1-0 lead.
• At 19:39, Dominic Cormier sealed the game with an empty net goal.
Leif Hertz (Kingston, Ont.) allowed just one goal on 31 shots.
• Anthony Brodeur stopped all 22 shots for the shutout.
  Overall Record: 8-11-3
Conference Record: 6-9-3

Next Game: Thursday, Jan. 9 @ Laurentian Voyageurs (7 p.m. – Sudbury, Ont.)
