MONTREAL --
Jessica Cormier and
Ariane Barker each tallied twice in the second period as the top-ranked Montreal Carabins clipped No.2 McGill 4-3 in a hard-fought RSEQ women's hockey confrontation at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
It marked the 51st rendezvous between these bitter archrivals. McGill owns a 38-13 record in those meetings but the Carabins hold a 12-11 edge in the last 23 matchups.
The Martlets dominated the first period and headed into the intermission with a 1-0 lead on rookie
Olivia Atkinson's first of two markers. But the tables were reversed in the second, with the Carabins outschooting McGill 17-1 and outscoring them 4-0.
Head coach
Peter Smith made a goaltending change after the fourth goal, replacing senior starter
Taylor Hough with sophomore
Kayla Loberg, who did not allow a goal the rest of the way, making 15 saves. Hough (2-2) took the loss with 12 saves on 16 shots.
The real Martlets showed up again in the final period, outshooting UdeM 13-8 and outscoring them 2-0, but it was too little, too late.
The result wasted a sweet soiree for McGill team captain
Melodie Daoust, who set up all three Martlets markers. Joining Atkinson on the scoresheet was
Marie-Philip Lavoie, who tallied her first of the season.
Carabins ntminder
Elodie Rousseau-Sirois (2-1) kicked out 21 of 24 shots for the victory.
The Carabins, who outshot McGill 31-24, went 0-for-1 on the power-play, while McGill was 0-for-3.
McGill, which dropped to 2-2 in league play, will host upstart Concordia (2-1-1) -- a team that stunned the Carabins 2-1 in the RSEQ season opener -- on Sunday, Nov. 8. The game, which was originally slated for a 3 pm start at McConnell Arena, has been moved to 7 p.m. because of the Alouettes football game at nearby Molson Stadium.
The Carabins (3-1-1) will host first-place Ottawa (4-2) on Sunday at 2 pm.
