The University of Regina's women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw on Saturday afternoon against the No. 1-ranked Alberta Pandas, ending Alberta's six-match winning streak.

Michelle Anderson made 11 saves for the Cougars during the match, which was played with a howling wind gusting up to 60 km/h from the south. Goalkeeper Kelti Biggs recorded the shutout for Alberta as the Pandas move to 6-0-1 on the season.

“It was a very solid defensive display by the team,” Cougars head coach Bob Maltman said. “We're full marks for our effort and commitment today. We talked about being assertive before the game and we were able to break up their attacks on a number of occasions.”

Alberta's Heather Lund had the best chance to score in the first half. She broke through the Regina defence in the 36th minute, but the Canada West scoring leader chipped it just wide of the right post after Anderson came out to challenge.

Going against the wind in the first half, Alberta had two shots on net to Regina's one.

With the strong wind at their backs in the second, the Pandas fired nine shots at Anderson but the fourth-year keeper stood tall. Anderson's best save was likely in the 58th minute when she dove to her right to block a Christina Le shot that was labelled for the corner.

The tie moves Regina's record to 2-3-2 on the season. The Cougars are now tied with Victoria for fourth place in the Canada West standings with eight points.

The Cougars will square off with Saskatchewan (2-4-1) at home tomorrow, while Alberta will travel for a match against Manitoba (0-4-3) in Winnipeg.
