Slow start proves costly for Ridgebacks

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Concordia Stingers took advantage of a slow start from the Ontario Tech University men's hockey team on Saturday night, winning 4-1.

The Stingers scored less than a minute after puck drop and never looked back. It was a sloppy start all around for Ontario Tech as they struggled to connect on passes and cleanly break through the neutral zone. The score was already 3-0 by the time the Ridgebacks were able to have sustained pressure in the offensive zone. That said, the pressure resulted in a late period goal to pull the home team within two heading into the first intermission.

"We competed tonight, but we cost ourselves in the first period," said head coach Curtis Hodgins. "We didn't manage the puck well."

The second and third period saw a much more competitive Ridgebacks team, as they began to grind for every inch of ice, but were unable to convert again offensively.

Ontario Tech hits the ice next weekend when they are in Kingston for a weekend doubleheader against the RMC Paladins. It marks the first road games of the season for the Ridgebacks.
  • Jean-Philippe Beaulieu opened the scoring for the Stingers after a Ridgebacks turnover at their own blue-line.
• Philippe Sanche finished a two-on-one rush for the Stingers to give them the 2-0 lead at 14:49 of the first.
• Anthony Beauchamp scored on a shorthanded breakaway at 17:07 to increase the Stingers lead to 3-0.
Kari Belec (Sudbury, Ont.) tipped in a point shot from Noah McMullin (Beaver Bank, N.S.) at 19:25 of the opening frame to cut the lead to 3-1. The assist was McMullin's first OUA point. • Marshall Wilton capped off the scoring at 12:01 in the second period.
Michael Bullion (Anchorage, Alaska) made 23 save, but was replaced for the third period. Leif Hertz (Kingston, Ont.) stopped all 10 shots he faced.
• Marc-Antoine Turcotte turned aside 22 of 23 shots he faced in the win.
