Karakostas scores heroic added time game winner as Huskies beat Mounties 1-0 in home opener

The Saint Mary's Huskies Soccer team began their 2022 regular season with a thrilling 1-0 win, defeating the Mount Allison Mounties in an evening match at Huskies Stadium.

The Huskies and Mounties fought hard in the first half, despite the Huskies having many chances to score, veteran Mounties goalie Sophie Austin (Kanata, ON) made multiple crucial saves to keep the match scoreless at halftime.

As each team battled to put points on the board, the defensive efforts continued during the start of the second half. In the 58th minute mark, the Huskies were in position to score and defender Madlyn Blinn (Lower Sackville, N.S.) attempted many shots and in the process freed up the goal for SMU to take a wide-open shot, however an offsides derailed the go-ahead goal.

In the final moments of the game, midfielder Anelise Karakostas (Victoria B.C.) scored the game winning goal from an assist by forward Allie Martin (Halifax, N.S.) to put the Huskies up 1-0.

Showing determination to get the score, Saint Mary's was able to get a 1-0 victory with Karakostas' heroic last minute score.

Karakostas was named Subway Player of the Game for her efforts. Huskies goalkeeper Grace Morrison also made five saves for her first clean-sheet of the campaign.

Saint Mary's improve to 1-0 on the season and will be going on the road to battle the Cape Breton Capers on Sunday, September 11th at 1 p.m. in Sydney, N.S.

The Mount Allison Mounties fall to 0-1 and travel to take on the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday, September 10th at 5 p.m. in Halifax.
