Mounties over Huskies in AUS Football Exhibition
The Mount Allison Mounties beat the Saint Mary's Huskies in exhibition action, 26-15.
The Mounties scored first, on a 4-yard pass from QB Justin Vogels to Robbie Walker. The Huskies would then get on the board as the Mounties gave up a safety to protect field position. This would eventually payoff, as the Mounties were able to recover a bad snap on a punt play for a Bailey Murrell touchdown. Adam Bennett would punch in a 1-yard touchdown with 5:27 left in the second quarter to bring the score to 22-2 Mounties. The Huskies responded just before half with a touchdown of their own, a 1-yard run by Duncan Patterson making the score 22-9 at the break. In the second half, teams would exchange multiple safety's as defenses took over.
Mount Allison quarterbacks Justin Vogels and CJ Valenti both went 5-7 to lead the Mounties to victory. Vogels threw for 75 yards and a touchdown, adding 17 yards rushing on 2 attempts, while Valenti added 65 passing yards to the Mounties totals. Duncan Patterson had the most success for the Huskies going 5-7 for 52 yards at quarterback, adding 21 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Rushing leaders were Brandt Burzuk for the Mounites with 9 rushes for 45 yards and Adam Bennett with 21 yards and a touchdown. Teon Alexander-Armour had the games longest run with his 23-yard scamper, finishing with a total of 38 yards.
Drew Besco stood out at receiving hauling in a 31-yard pass, finishing the day with 50 receiving yards on 2 attempts. James Laceby had 3 catches for 29 yards while Robbie Walker had 2 catches for 27 yards with a touchdown. Chandler Zinck-Marier's 28 yards on 3 receptions set the high-water mark for the Huskies receiving core.
Defensively, Mounties Jack Gillis had the most tackles in the contest with eight, while Xavier Oppong-Watson added four tackles for the home team. Huskies were led by Ryan Dalloul and Ryan Butler who had 5.5 and 4.5 tackles respectively.
Brycen Mayoh was very busy on special teams accumulating 118 return yards for the Huskies. His teammate Chandler Zinck-Marier was also productive with 83 return yards. James Laceby led the Mounties with all purpose yards with 54 contributing 21 yards in the return game. Robbie Walker had the highest return total for the Mounties with 25 yards.
The Saint Mary's Huskies will begin their regular season play next weekend, as they travel to STFX for a 2pm kickoff.
The Mounties begin their season on a bye and will begin their regular season play at home on September 3rd as they host Bishop's with a 3pm start.
