Gryphons drop to #3 Lancers

Box Score
GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons women's basketball team fell to the CIS No. 3 Windsor Lancers 68-53 today (Jan 19) at the Mitchell Centre.

The Gryphons were lead once again by rookie guard Erica McFadden (Alma, ON) with 11 points on the day.  Jasmine Douglas added 13 rebounds to the defensive effort in an attempt to thwart the Lancer offence.

Windsor's Jessica Clemencon (St.Rambert, France) led all scorers with 24 points.  She was followed closely by Korissa Williams (Windsor, ON) with 18.

Kayla Goodhoofd (Oakville, ON) got the Gryphons off to an explosive start with a quick steal off the tip to kick start the Gryphon offence.  Jasmine Douglas (Guelph, ON) complimented the effort with a dominating presence in the key to keep the game from the Lancers as they Gryphons climbed ahead 15-10.  But despite the strong strart, the Lancers were able to jump on several missed Gryphon passes to steal the lead with a minute left to end the quarter ahead 20-15.

Windsor was quick to build off their five-point streak at the end of the first with a deep three from Bojana Kovecevic (Windsor, ON) to continue a 20-4 streak to jump ahead 30-19 at the five minute mark.  Persistent efforts from Kate MacTavish  (Waterloo, ON) kept the Gryphons energized however the first half ended with the Lancers leading 41-26.

The Lancer defence maintained their tenacity to keep the Gryphons off the board to extend their lead with a six-point streak early in the third.  The Gryphons were finally able to find a cohesive rhythm on both sides of the ball with Jasmine Douglas opening and lead a 10-4 burst.  However, the Lancers were able to storm back to regain their earlier tempo to outshoot the Gryphons 16-12 to build on their lead.

Control quickly switched hands in the opening stages of the fourth as the Gryphons launched an 8-point streak to close the gap to 11.  Great defensive awareness combined with the offensive surge limited the Lancers' attack to trips to the charity stripe in an effort to stem the Lancers' productivity.  But despite the last quarter surge from the Gryphons to outshoot the Lancers 15-11, Windsor was able to hold onto a 68-53 lead to seal their 13th win of the season.

The Gryphons travel to Waterloo on Wednesday (Jan. 23) to take on the Waterloo Warriors.  Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm.
