Ridgebacks with a night of firsts in win against nationally ranked Gaels

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Ontario Tech men's hockey team claimed their first victory of the season on Wednesday night with a 3-2 victory over the defending Queen's Cup champion Queen's Gaels.

After dropping a back-to-back on the weekend, the Ridgebacks left the ice after the first period leading 1-0.

The game was an exciting back-and-forth affair with the No. 9 ranked Gaels as they entered the third period tied 1-1. It did not take long into the final 20 minutes before the Ridgebacks regained the lead, with Liam Hurley (Cambridge, Ont.) notching his first career OUA goal. "It's always important to get the first out of the way," said Hurley. "It's pretty surreal."

The Ridgebacks battled throughout the game, as they twice held a lead only to see Queen's tie it.

"We had great battle back tonight," said Hodgins. "It was good, especially beating a quality team like Queen's."

Ontario Tech continues their homestand on Saturday night as they host the Concordia Stingers before hitting the road for the first time next weekend.
Austin Eastman (Lindsay, Ont.) opened the scoring with only 2:38 remaining in the first period, after deflecting a Jake Bricknell (Port Perry, Ont.) shot. JC Thivierge (Welland, Ont.) notched his first assist of the season.
Liam Hurley scored 1:18 into the third period, after streaking down the right wing and firing a perfect shot to left corner.
• Josh Curtis and Matthew Hotchkiss had the goals for Queen's, both on identical rebound bang-ins.
Josh Maguire (Cobourg, Ont.) scored the game-winning goal, banging in a loose puck in front of the Queen's net with 1:25 remaining in the third.   Michael Bullion (Anchorage, Alaska) made 29 saves for the win.
• Luke Richardson stopped 18 of 21 in the lose.
  Overall Record: 3-4-0
Conference Record: 1-2-0
