MHKY | Voyageurs Outlast Thunderwolves

MHKY | Voyageurs Outlast Thunderwolves
The Voyageurs played their third game of the season against their fellow neighbours from the North, the Lakehead Thunderwolves, in the first of a back-to-back this Friday and Saturday night.

Brett Jacklin, a recent Voyageur addition, had himself a night with two goals and one assist. Jacklin's first goal would come on a cross-crease pass from Gabriel Paquin and wasting no time shelving it on Nic Renyard just 58 seconds into the game. William Gignac would pick up the secondary assist.

The Voyageur offence was firing on all cylinders as, with five minutes left in the first period, Marc-Antoine Gagnon sent a shot from the point into traffic that Xavier Couture would redirect past Renyard, giving the Vees a 2-0 lead going into the second.

The Wolves responded urgently to start the second period as, by the four minute mark, both Daniel Del Paggio and Jordan King beat Mackenzie Savard making for a 2-2 tie.

Ben Morris led the Voyageur penalty kill on an offensive surge putting the Wolves defence on their heels and coming away with the puck. Hayden Hopkins would gain possession of the puck and feed Morris who beat Renyard low pad on a breakaway, making for a 3-2 game after the short handed Voyageur goal.

Tomas Soustal would score the final goal for the Wolves nearing the end of the second making for yet again, a tie game at the end of the second frame, a period the Thunderwolves controlled, outshooting the hosts 20-4.

The third period had Voyageurs written all over it with the Vees adding two more goals. Gignac tapped in a loose puck from Jacklin and Paquin on the power play just two minutes and forty-three seconds into the third making for a 4-3 game for the Vees.

The last goal of the matchup came from Jacklin after his linemate Gignac was stuffed on a wrap around a floating puck slid into the slot and Jacklin hammered home his second goal of the night over Renyards blocker.

Savard would come away with a win on thirty-seven saves, besting Renyard's thirty.

The Voyageurs will play the Thunderwolves one last time tomorrow night at Countryside Arena in hopes to extend their win streak.  Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm.
