Raso scores twice in Rams win over Trent

TORONTO - The floodgates finally opened for the Ryerson women's soccer team on Wednesday night, scoring three goals in a 3-1 victory over the Trent Excalibur.

The Rams [1-1-4] notch their first win of the season, handing the struggling Excalibur [0-5-1] their fifth loss of the season.  Ryerson had a strong start and carried the momentum all the way through.

"We came out to win today and it showed," goalkeeper Stefanie Webster said on the team's first win.  "We dominated 99.9 per cent of the second half."

Andrea Raso scored two goals in the first half, bringing to her team lead to three.  Raso took advantage of an out-of-position Trent keeper to pot her first and added another long-range goal, dipping into the bottom corner.  Looking for a new hat collection, Raso almost completed the trick on a several chances.

"One of our players played with their goalie in the past.  She told us that she wasn't that good so I figured I'd just shoot," said Raso, who was also sporting the captain's armband for tonight's game.

Their peers joined the Rams as the free fan bus and pizza provided incentive to check out the game.  The demographic of the game was noticeably different, with fewer parents but more students and cowbells making noise for the Rams.

"We're here to represent our school," said Raso, "it feels good for our school to actually come watch us, especially in a game like today."

Calaigh Copland, with her second of the season, had the other goal for Ryerson, while Keelan Drumm responded for Trent.

Shannon Cosgrove, a first-year right-winger, sat out the contest after sustaining a concussion against Toronto on Sunday.  Defender Julia Rao left the game and stayed out, but only as a precaution as the team expects her to be fit to go for the next game.

The Rams and Excalibur played a clean game tonight, with no cards being issued to either side.

With the win, the Rams keep pace with fourth placed Laurentian and stay ahead of sixth placed Nipissing.  The Rams next game will be against the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees at Allan Lamport Stadium on Sunday at 1 pm.
