Gryphons blank Golden Hawks, 2-0

Men's Hockey vs. WLU 2012 Gallery GUELPH, Ont. – Led by the lockdown goaltending of Brandon Maxwell (Guelph, Ont.) the Guelph Gryphons men's hockey team shutout the Laurier Golden Hawks tonight 2-0 at the Gryphon Centre.
 
After Thursday's tough loss to the Western Mustangs, the Gryphons came out tonight (Nov. 24) looking for a win. The Gryphons advance to a 10-5-1 regular season record while Laurier drops to a 5-7-2 standing.
 
The first period was fast-paced and ended with a 1-0 head start for the home-ice Guelph Gryphons. Nicklas Huard (North Bay, ON) opened the scoring with a fancy deke on the Laurier net-minder at 10:52, he was assisted by James Merrett (Vernon, ON) and Daniel Broussard (Fayetteville, NC). The Gryphons outshot the Golden Hawks 15-7 in the first period.
 
Men's Hockey Action
The game remained evenly matched throughout. No score was recorded in the second period. Both teams proved their strength on the penalty-kill as they received minor penalties throughout the last two periods. Michael Hasson (Ariss, ON) sealed the deal for the Gryphons at 19:46 with an empty net goal assisted by goaltender Branden Maxwell. The Gryphons outshot the Golden Hawks 39-26.
 
Maxwell finished with 26 saves for the win and his third shutout of the season, while Laurier goalie Ryan Daniels finished with 37 saves.
 
The Gryphons travel to Windsor next weekend for their last two games of the semester. Puck drops at 7:30 Friday (Nov. 30) and Saturday (Dec. 1).
