MONTREAL -- Forward
Laura Jardin of Calgary, Alta., scored the overtime winner on a power-play at 3:35 as the McGill University women's hockey team eked out a 2-1 victory over Concordia to open the annual Theresa Humes Tournament at Ed Meagher Arena, Friday.
The Martlets improved to 2-0 in preseason play, while Concordia dropped to 3-2.
The Stingers opened the scoring when
Emilie Lavoie struck lightning at 9:57 of the first period. After a scoreless second stanza, McGill forced overtime after a timely shorthanded marker from forward
Emma Piers, a science freshman from Beaconsfield, Que., who connected at 11:01 of the third period. On the play.,
Concordia forward Léonie Philbert coughed the puck up at the McGill blue line, which led to a breakaway by Piers, whose marker was her first career goal with the Martlets,
Jardin's overtime winner came after
Stingers rookie Émilie Lavoie was whistled for a double-minor check-to-the-head infraction, which gave McGill a 4-on-3 advantage.
Concordia had a 29-26 margin in shots, which includes a 6-1 edge for McGill in the extra period. The Stingers had a tough time deciphering senior goaltender
Tricia Deguire, a native of Sherbrooke, Que., who made 28 saves for the win. Stingers veteran
Alice Philbert registered 24 saves and took the loss.
The Martlets went 1-for-5 on the power-play and netted a shorty while erasing all four penalties taken.
The Carabins won their tournament opener 3-1 over Bishop's, Friday. Bishop's (0-3) will confront Concordia in Round 2 of the tourney on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. McGill will play on Saturday night when they host the Montreal Carabins (1-2) in a 7 p.m. faceoff at the Ed Meagher Arena. The final round is slated for Sunday, with the third-place game set for 3:30 p.m., followed by the championship showdown at 7 p.m.
