WBB: CAPERS Fall in High Scoring Affair
The Memorial Sea-Hawks won the first of two games against the Cape Breton Capers 93-89.
(St. John's, NL)- After a long hiatus, the Memorial Sea-Hawks took to the floor in their home opener against Cape Breton University (CBU). It was quite the rough start for the Hawks as they struggled to get back into their rhythm on the home court. The Capers started the weekend series with an 11-3 run in the first five minutes. One major bright spot for MUN was Hannah Green, who scorched the first half with her shooting from deep, going 4/5.
For the Capers, they exploited Memorial's slack on the backboard, eating up 10 offensive rebounds. Scoring was much more balanced for the Capers, with no bright and shining stars at the half, but a balanced team effort. Their top scorers at the half were Kiyara Letlow (8) and Mackenzee Ryan (7).
The second half was twenty minutes of tense, competitive basketball. The Capers rallied back from Memorial's strong second quarter, outscoring the Hawks 30-20 in the third frame alone. Kiyara Letlow continued her strong performance in the third, scoring half of her team's points on her own (15).
The fourth was a close battle, but in the end, Memorial was able to put the nail in the coffin with Inés Salat Margarit's clutch and-one basket in the final minute. While the Capers tried their best to overcome the late two-game possession score difference, it was too little, too late. Kiyara Letlow dominated for the Capers throughout the whole game, finishing with a double-double (28 points/14 rebounds). Player of the game commendations was given to Hannah Green of the Sea-Hawks for her own double-double (19 points/12 rebounds). The combined efforts of the starting five for the Hawks were the push they needed to finish off the capers; each of them finished the game with double-digit points (Short – 18; Ekstrom – 18; Salat Margrit – 16; Green – 19; Roche – 13). The Hawks tip off again tomorrow afternoon at 1:00pm. Both games are available at austv.ca.
