Sea-Hawks earn weekend split with win over Panthers
The Memorial Sea-Hawks faced the UPEI Panthers in the second game off their home opening weekend. Memorial Sea-Hawks were able to capture the win with a score of 70-58.
ST. JOHN'S, NL—The Memorial Sea-Hawks faced the UPEI Panthers in the second game off their home opening weekend. Memorial Sea-Hawks were able to capture the win with a score of 70-58.
The UPEI Panthers #33 Deborah Aboagye got her team on the board first launching a 3 pointer. Making the Memorial Sea-Hawks retaliate and #8 Rebecka Ekström proved she can do the same, to start the scoring for her side. The Sea-Hawks continued to dominate the court, gaining a 12 point lead within the first five minutes. MUN continued to run down the Panthers shot clock with strong defensive skills from the whole team. Sea-Hawks were able to maintain their lead ending the first quarter with a score of 22-11.
UPEI Panthers came back strong to start off the second quarter. Finding themselves capturing many rebounds and able to find the back of the net closing the gap between the two teams. Panther's #11 Lauren Rainford specifically was able to help out her side making many of the baskets she took. On the Seahawks side #15 Hannah Green and #11 Erin Long have been shooting their way through the game to keep their team staying on top of the Panthers, ending the half with a score of 34-33 for the Sea-Hawks.
#11 Lauren Rainford for the Panthers found the back of the net throughout the first half making herself the top scoring player of the first half with a total of 14 points. #33 Deborah Aboagye found herself leaving the first half with 6 points along with #9 Samantha Zoffranieri getting 4 points. Sea-Hawks #15 Hannah Green was their teams top scorer during the first half of the game finding herself with 12 points. Following behind were #8 Rebecka Ekström and #11 Erin Long with 8 points each.
To start off the 3rd quarter #14 Devon Lawlor for UPEI was able to find the net after a long 2 minutes of back and forth play with no baskets from either side, bringing the Panthers to lead the game. Memorial with an abundance of turnovers and unable to capture many baskets late in the 3rd quarter, the Panthers continued to maintain the lead. UPEI ended the quarter on top with a score of 49-47.
#8 Rebecka Ekström opened up the close scoring 4th quarter with a solid 3 pointer to continue the back and forth scoring of the game. Both teams continued to battle throughout the quarter, Sea-Hawks #7 Alana Short showed up and was able to capture many baskets for her team. An intense back and forth game came to an end with Memorial Sea-Hawks being able to come out on top to finish off the Sea-Hawks home opening weekend, the final score being 70-58.
#11 Lauren Rainford was the top scoring player of the game with 28 points. Memorial's #8 Rebecka Ekström found herself the top scorer for her side with 17 points. #7 Alana Short following closely with 15 points for herself and trailing behind her was #11 Erin Long with 13 points.
